According to the LADWP, early morning water main breaks were likely caused by work done yesterday at Franklin Canyon Reservoir. As of 6:30a, LADWP crews were responding to 3 confirmed water main breaks and 5 additional potential breaks in Metro LA.
One confirmed break is in the area of 3rd and Fairfax…leading to the temporary closing of 3rd Street between Ogden and Fairfax as crews work to repair about 70 feet of roadway damaged by the break in an 8 inch line. Also, the Starbucks at Farmers Market is temporarily closed due to no water service. Other Farmers Market businesses appear to be unaffected – but it’s early and we advise double checking throughout the day.
According to tweets sent out by @LADWP as they began to get a handle on what was occurring, “Franklin Cyn Reservoir was taken offline Monday for diver inspection of floating cover and water was routed thru another system. Pressure changes, including over-pressurization can occur in this type of operation, exposing weak pipes and leading to main breaks”.
At 8:25a, @LADWP tweeted that only 110 DWP customers are affected by 5 confirmed 6″ and 8″ water main breaks in the metro area this morning.
Further details will be available via @LADWP…we will re-tweet important updates. Expect traffic delays in the area around Fairfax and 3rd.
