Salt & Straw Makes Larchmont its LA Home

Have you seen the lines out the door at 240 N. Larchmont, home of the new Salt & Straw Ice Cream, and wondered just what is all the fuss about?

It could be the Cinnamon Apple Donut ice cream (with toasted chunks of Sidecar Donuts)  or perhaps the Goat Cheese with Black Olive Brittle scoop (described as “very farm-y.”) Or perhaps the Sea Salt with Caramel, with its “hand-burned” caramel ribbons amid bursts of sea salt, the most popular fix for a hot September afternoon. Whatever flavor patrons sample or choose, they seem to leave happy that Salt & Straw is the newest addition to the boulevard.

“We can’t believe what a fantastic reception we’ve had here,” owner Kim Malek told the Larchmont Buzz. Kim and her cousin Tyler Malek are Portland residents (they have three shops there) but have spent much of the summer in Los Angeles creating the new flavors unique to LA that, as Kim told us “reflect the community we serve.”  Tyler did a lot of research to come up with the Larchmont menu, using all locally sourced ingredients and products. The menu will change regularly, and free tastes of the various flavors have helped to make the line linger longer as patrons sample the flavors.

“Larchmont is a very special place,” Kim said. “We believe that strong businesses make for a strong community, so we are getting involved in Larchmont as much as we can.” Salt & Straw has joined the Larchmont Boulevard Association (LBA) and attended their mixer last month. Ian Kane, a manager from one of the Portland stores has moved to LA and will be a regular sight on site at Larchmont’s Salt & Straw.

The shop couldn’t have asked for a better weather introduction – with temperatures hovering around 100 on the first weekend and in the high 80s on the second. Even as the weather cools, the curious may still be drawn to try other fantastical flavors Salt & Straw has to offer. The epicurean among us may go for their Tomato Water Olive Oil ice cream, while others may stay with more recognizable ingredients, including the Salted Malted Choco Chip Cookie Dough, or perhaps California Peaches with Lemon Crumble.
