Art Division Open House Saturday


Art Division, an arts program for young adults, will hold an open house on Saturday, May 21 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00  p.m.  The event is free of charge and all students, family, supporters and community members are welcome. The first 100 guests will receive a free print by artist and Art Division founder Dan McCleary.

Founded by McCleary in 2011,  Art Division is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to give young adults in-depth training in the arts and encourage them to pursue a career in arts.  All the programs are free of charge, offering young adults in-depth instruction to students in the Rampart District to Los Angeles, one of the city’s most densely populated and economically challenged communities. Art Division program are now open to students all over the city.

“Art Division is dedicated to community engagement and building a thriving arts community,” said Mary Woodward, a local realtor and resident who has served on the school’s board since its inception. “Art Division believes that focused instruction, individualized tutoring and personal support gives students the tools they need to pursue higher education achieve self-sufficiency and obtain careers in the arts and related fields.”

Courses include drawing, painting, printmaking,  mural painting, photography, introduction to film arts, fundamentals of music production, art history and gallery and museum studies we have been successful in assisting many students in reaching their goals to attend college and secure jobs in the arts.

Artwork by students and faculty will be on display in three storefront studios, art library a new gallery just west of MacArthur Park. The exhibit will include current drawings, prints and a survey of paintings by faculty and students from the last 10 years. Students will be on hand to give tours of the art division campus. There will also be musical performances,  poetry readings and printmaking demonstrations. Paintings, drawings and prints will be for sale as well. Catering will be provided by Mia Mero Mele.  The studios will also be open on Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. for another opportunity to view the work.
