Ciclavia – A Great Way to Spend a Spring Sunday!

This has been such a long, cold, dark, and rainy winter, that finally experiencing sunny spring weather feels like a big liberation.  So now that it’s comfortable to get out and enjoy our great California climate again, we’d like to give a big shout-out to a wonderful way to spend your Sunday this weekend – the return of Ciclavia to the Mid-City area.

Ciclavia, as many people know by now, is the periodic open streets event that closes several miles of major corridors to powered vehicles, and frees them up for several hours on a designated Sunday for people to walk, run, pedal, skate, or otherwise peruse and explore various parts of our great city.  The event is completely free, and it’s not a race – just join in whenever and wherever you want along the route, and experience as much as you want, at whatever pace is comfortable.  It is, in short, the very best of Los Angeles, in many, many ways.

If you’ve never been to a Ciclavia, this week’s route, which travels from Mid-City to Pico-Union, is relatively close to home and would provide a great chance to give it a try. And for those who have participated before, this will be a super convenient way to enjoy the event again.

The route is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 16.  It travels along Washington Blvd., from La Brea to 7th Ave., then turns north on 7th Ave. to Venice Blvd., and follows Venice to the eastern terminus at Hoover Street.  Traffic along the route runs both ways, though, so you can start at either end, or jump in anywhere in between, and walk or roll as you wish.

Note: A digital map is also available, with both route information and points of interest along the way.

Also, in addition to riding, walking, skating or otherwise moving along the route, and stopping to explore various stores, restaurants, and other points of interest, there will also be several specific activity hubs, where various city and neighborhood organizations will provide entertainment, information, music, photo ops, art shows, opportunities for community involvement, and more.  And, of course, don’t forget to stop at the Wellington Square Farmers Market, open until 2 p.m. at Washington and Wellington, for tasty treats and provisions.

For even more information, check out both the event’s general FAQ, and the “How to Ciclavia Guide,” which will tell you everything else you may need to know.

And finally, here are some photos from the last time Ciclavia traveled this route, in 2019.  Looking forward to joining in again!
