Day of the Dead at Hollywood Forever this Saturday

If you haven’t been to the Dia de los Muertos celebration at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, now in its thirteenth year, put it on your list for adventurous outings this weekend. The cemetery becomes a visual feast of colorful, scary and sentimental ceremonial alters accompanied by a parade of onlookers and partakers dressed in fantastic costumes and painted faces.

This year’s event runs from 12 noon to 12 am on Saturday, Oct 27 and will reach back into the pre-Aztec roots of Dia de los Muertos to explore the Mayan Gods, rituals and calendar. A fascinating journey for the entire family, you may want to go during daylight hours if you have young, hyper-imaginative children who may be spooked by all the spooky characters running around. But if your crew can handle a little death and walking-in-the-dark between the brightly colorful alters, visiting the Dia De Los Muertos celebration at night shouldn’t be missed.

There are food trucks and craft booths to explore, and this year the event will feature OZOMATLI live on stage, as well as La Santa Cecilia, Very Be Careful, Las Cafeteras, and Tribu. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online ahead of the event so you don’t have to wait in line.

From the event: Dia De Los Muertos is one of Mexico’s traditional holidays reuniting and honoring beloved ancestors, family and friends. It is an ancient and enduring ritual when the living commune with the dead – a mystical night when the veil is lifted between their two realms and they may share a day together.
