On Thursday, March 14, Marlborough School and its Girl Up group will be hosting a screening of Girl Rising, a feature-length film produced by 10X10, a Larchmont-based production company that has been screening the film across the country in the past several weeks.

Girl Rising delivers a single message in striking and stunning way: educating girls in developing nations will change the world. The film is a visual and touching documentary on what life is like for young women in communities across Asia, Africa, and South America. It tells the story of 10 extraordinary girls from 10 countries, written by 10 celebrated writers and narrated by 10 renowned actresses, including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys, and Selena Gomez.

The film was produced at 215 N Larchmont Blvd by the 10×10 production team, led by local resident Martha Adams. A trailer for the film, shared below, gives a taste of the global-trek the filmmakers went through to record individual stories from girls in remote communities.

At Marlborough, the Girl Up club was started two years ago after Queen Rania of Jordan led a Girl Up pep rally at Marlborough.  “She spoke about how there are girls around the world that are not able to attend school, or are forced to be married at young ages, or walk for 4-6 hours a day to receive clean water, ” club leader Annie Gersh told the Buzz. “I was very moved and inspired, so a few girls and I helped form the Girl Up club.” Gersh is also Co-Chair of  the national Girl Up Teen Advisor board of some 15 high school girls from around the country who serve as the face of the campaign across the U.S.

The event begins at 6 pm with a light supper and the screening will air from 6:30-8 pm in Caswell Hall on campus. Reservations for the $10 tickets should be made online, and funds will go to Girl Up and educating more girls in far flung areas. Producer Alex Dionne will answer questions after the screening.
