Hancock Park Native Yankee SS Brendan Ryan Helps Wilshire Warriors

The Wilshire Warriors Baseball community is in for a big treat when Wilshire Baseball alumnus and NY Yankee shortstop Brendan Ryan comes home for a visit. This Saturday, the league will host the 1st Annual Wilshire Warriors Booster Dinner where Ryan will speak and sign autographs.

Ryan first learned to play baseball with the Wilshire Baseball Association. From the fields of John Burroughs Middle School in Hancock Park, he went on to play ball at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, and then was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003 while he was in college. His appearance on Saturday is sure to inspire future neighborhood All Stars.

Ryan also attended Wagon Wheel School and St. Brendan School, the site of Saturday’s fundraiser.

The neighborhood baseball league has grown significantly since Brendan Ryan’s days. The Wilshire Warriors PONY Baseball spring rec league is made up of 600 local boys and girls ages 4-14. Also, the league now has PONY status. PONY stands for ”Protect Our Nation’s Youth.” PONY leagues are different than Little League – they have the same rules as high school, college and Major League Baseball. The most competitive players from the Wilshire Warriors rec league play on the Wilshire Warriors travel teams. The travel division consists of multiple weekly practices and year round regional and national tournaments in the 6-13 age bracket.

This week is the last week to sign up for the Wilshire Warriors spring rec league.  Registration ends on Friday, January 31.  Consider signing up your future Major Leaguer/college scholarship player at WilshireWarriors.com and then head on over to the fundraiser on Saturday!
