Our local hub of art and culture on Wilshire Blvd, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) offers a variety of exhibits this Valentine month that makes us want to say “We Heart LACMA.”

EX2463_1smallBodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy closes this Sunday, February 10th, so go soon if you want to see eight works by the Italian master along with work from twenty other artists who carried on the Caravaggio style with paintings of “strangeness, beauty and raw emotion.”  Tickets need to be ordered in advance for a ‘timed’ entrance. The Los Angeles Contemporary Ballet Company will also be staging the Ballet “Caravaggio” this Wed Feb 6 at 7:30 pm in the Bing Theater. Tickets are sold out, but perhaps hanging outside the theater at show time you may be able to secure one.

LACMAThe Stanley Kubrick Exhibition is well worth a visit for it’s real models from 2001: A Space Odyssey, old-school, careful shot-lists and storyboards for many of Kubrick’s renown films, and footage of portions of his cinema screened in the exhibit including Clockwork Orange and The Shining. On Saturday, Feb 9th LACMA will be offering a free daylong event exploring the ways in which the exhibition and the Stanley Kubrick Archive cast light on debates over film production practices. Bringing together industry practitioners and academics, the event will feature presentations on both practice-related issues and more traditional historical- and theoretical-based subjects. Free event but tickets are required.

starkbarLACMA will be open late on Valentine’s Day, Thursday Feb 14th, until 9 pm and special events are planned but not yet announced. Could be a perfect way to celebrate one’s love for art, or one another, to meander through the galleries and a have a drink at the Stark Bar or dinner at Ray’s. It’s one of our favorite local spots to sit and watch people stroll by, and the red-themed decor seems to match the valentine holiday. Note: the galleries will be closed for one hour, 5-6pm, on the 14th, but the food and drink venues will remain open so plan accordingly.

Target sponsors a Free Holiday Monday: Presidents Day on Monday, Feb 18th opening at 11 am. Enjoy free tours, programs, art-making activities, and live performances of fiddle tunes and foot-stomping dance numbers by old-time trio Triple Chicken Foot at 12:30 and 2:45 pm.
