Pasadena Playhouse Explores Wilder’s Our Town

Jane Kaczmarek

The Pasadena Playhouse has teamed up with neighboring Vroman’s Bookstore to present a livestreamed celebration of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, the quintessential American play. The event includes live performances from previous cast members, including Jane Kaczmarek, who played the Stage Manager in the 2017 Pasadena Playhouse/Deaf West production; she also hosts.

Howard Sherman, author of the new book Another Day’s Begun: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town in the 21st Century, talks with Kaczmarek about the enduring legacy of the play. Sherman’s book explores 13 key productions of Our Town.

Our Town’s deceptively simple form and vintage timeframe—even at its debut in 1938 its events were 30 years in the past—can obscure its complex and eternal themes. Sherman’s book makes a case for the healing powers of Wilder’s text and its pervasiveness in American culture.

Through extensive interviews with more than 100 artists about their own experience of the play and its impact on them professionally and personally, Another Day’s Begun shows why this particular work remains so important, essential, and beloved.

Another Day’s Begun: Exploring Our Town streams live for free on March 11, 2021 at 6:30pm on PlayhouseLive. The show will be available on demand beginning March 12.
