Prom Season: Transportation Tip

prom

This weekend ushers in Prom season and Larchmont Buzz has a tip to help families save a little money and help Prom goers enjoy a night out that affords the freedom and mobility that they have come to expect.

new_uber_logoUber is a web app that allows a user to access a private driver on-demand. And it’s just a little more expensive than a taxi….but oh so much more cool.

Parents can set up an account at Uber.com. During set-up you will need to attach a credit card to the account. Then download the app to your i-phone and login. You will want to make sure your Prom goer downloads the app and logs in with your user name and password so they can access Uber on Prom night.

The Uber app gives the user access to request a ride at anytime using GPS to locate the closest available private driver to the user’s location. The user receives a text confirming pick-up with an estimated arrival time. The user doesn’t need cash – the account automatically charges the credit card attached to the account.

Uber has private drivers with black town cars that fit four and black SUVs that fit six. You can fiddle with the app in advance to get an approximate cost for the trip your prom goer will be taking – but we can pretty much guarantee that it’s less than paying for a limo and all the time that the driver will need to sit around waiting for the crew while they are at the Prom. Only one reservation per Uber account…so if there are more than 6 passengers, you will need a second account.

NOTE – Uber is also a great app to have handy when you feel like having ‘one drink too many’. Just $25 for a black SUV to Hollywood! You can access Uber from your phone in lots of cities – including New York, Chicago, Dallas, London, Paris, Rome and more.
