The Week Ahead – Events for April 10-16, 2021

This week’s events feature more food-centric activities than usual, so it’s definitely a good one. You can learn about the history of cooking your meal via volcano, help the Monarch butterfly, and more.

Arts & Culture

The Andaz West Hollywood’s Late Night Drive-In series, on the roof of its garage, is back this weekend with Cinema Paradiso on Saturday, April 10th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per car, and food and drink options are available on site for purchase.

Kohn Gallery on Highland debuts a new exhibition this week by New Haven-based artist Chiffon Thomas, whose “practice is an interdisciplinary one, ranging across hand embroidered mixed media painting, collage, drawing, and sculpture.”

The 5th Annual USC Comedy Festival is virtual this year and runs through Sunday, April 11th.  It includes free panels and Q& As with Bill Hader, Ziwe Fumudoh, Aidy Bryant, and more.

Community & History

On Saturday, April 10th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. join Games For Change, for an online Game Jam from Games For Change and Minecraft: Educator Edition, where kids will learn about coding and visit with the crew from Minecraft before “coding time – our Minecraft experts help kids of all skill levels work on their games.”

Meanwhile, the Culinary Historians of Southern California will take you through The Strangest Cooking Methods In The World on Saturday, April 10th at 10:30 a.m. Culinary historian Richard Foss will present the “light-hearted history of culinary innovation from prehistory to the present day,” including using “heat from volcanoes, hot springs, automobile engines, household appliances, weapons, and other ingenious methods.”  It’s free, but registration is required at the link above.

This week is also Dine Latino Restaurant Week, through Sunday, April 11, and “showcases the depth, diversity, and resilience of Latino restaurants in the capital of Latino cuisine.” Nearby participating restaurants include Mercado, Sky’s Gourmet Tacos, and more.

La Monarca Bakery (which is also participating in Dine Latino Restaurant Week) is celebrating Earth Day and honoring its namesake insect by joining the  ECOLIFE Conservation and Natural History Museum’s Butterfly Pavilion effort to Save The Monarchs. For every purchase of La Monarca’s packaged goods, 1% of all the sales will go to the ECOLIFE Conservation. Plus they’re also selling California Milkweed seeds to plant in your garden to attract monarchs and provide a crucial food source for the butterflies.

Saturday, April 10th is also National Siblings Day, and several of everyone’s favorite vendors at The Original Farmer’s Market are owned and operated by siblings, including Sticker Planet (run by Hilary and Richard Kraft) and Zia Valentina,  a restaurant offering a healthy take on Mediterranean cuisine (run by sisters isters Naomi and Dorit Kashia).

If you’d prefer cocktails instead of food, join the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles on Sunday, April 11th at 4:00 p.m. for Art Deco Entertainment Venues of the Post-Prohibition Years: A Postcard Pictorial, which will explore “five theater and entertainment complexes constructed in 1930s America” that  “represent fine examples of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne design.” Plus, the Art Deco Society will provide three cocktail recipes for you to drink along while you learn.

Local Government

Finally, the Greater Wilshire Neighorhood Council’s monthly board meeting is on Wednesday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m.,  —  and it’s especially worth attending as it’s the first session with the newly elected board.
