The Week Ahead: Events for August 22-28

We’ve got a couple of good ways to get your dance on this week!

As kids are heading back to school for a very different kind of school year, it’s a good opportunity for everyone to learn something new. This week provides plenty of opportunities to learn new skills like cooking and dancing, as well as to learn more about our city’s history and culture.

Community & History

This summer there have been protests all over Los Angeles, including outside the Getty House in Windsor Square, but protest is not new to the city of Los Angeles. On Monday, August 24th at 7:00 p.m., hear from Jon Wiener and Brenda Stevenson about the history of protest in L.A. from the ‘60s to today, from Larchmont’s own Chevalier’s Books. Wiener is a co-author of Set the Night on Fire: L.A. in the Sixties and Stevenson wrote The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins which tells the story of the 1991 murder of a 15-year-old African American girl in South Central Los Angeles and the subsequent trial which in many ways set the stage for the 1992 riots. Read more about the authors and their work, and find the link to watch the event here

On Thursday, August 27th at 7:00 p.m., you can learn even more about our city and its largest park, Griffith Park, from Casey Schreiner, whose book Discovering Griffith Park, A Local’s Guide is the “first in-depth guidebook to one of the nation’s largest and most visited parks.” Schreiner is also the founder of the Modern Hiker website and will explain why he believes Griffith Park, “which boasts a 70+ mile trail system and the best views of the Hollywood sign, is the best park in the country.” The free virtual presentation is part of the Architecture & Beyond lecture series from the Los Feliz Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, with support from the Friends of the Los Feliz Library and Skylight Books.  Register for the event here.

Local Government

The Land Use Committee of the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council is meeting on Tuesday, August 25th at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will include a discussion of the proposed “Uplift Melrose” project , which would incorporate safe public spaces on Melrose, among other improvements. View the full agenda here

On Wednesday, August 26th at 6:00 p.m., the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council will host a “Budget 101” Town Hall, with Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin, and Jack Humphreville, GWNC Budget Representative and Co-Chair of the Neighborhood Council Budget Advocates. The event will break down the City Budget process for anyone who wants to become more engaged in local politics but might not know where to start. Read more about the Town Hall and find the link to watch here.

Arts & Culture

On Monday, August 24th at 4:00 p.m., the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust will present a virtual reading of the play Righteous by Jeff Cohen. The play tells the story of “the horrible question faced by Eduard Schulte, a captain of German industry and member of Hitler’s inner circle. Righteous is the true story of the man who warned the world of Hitler’s plan to murder all the Jews in Europe. Schulte’s alarm reached the desk of President Roosevelt in December 1942.” Register for the event here (there is a suggested donation of $10).

Artist Luchita Hurtado (her career survey I Live I Die I Will Be Reborn opened at LACMA in February) passed away this week at the age of 99. Though you can’t visit the exhibit in person, LACMA has provided a number of resources to learn more about Hurtado’s life and legacy from home, including a commemoration of the artist by LACMA curator Jennifer King, and a filmed conversation with the artist from February 15th.

If you’re looking to get out of the house to appreciate art, on Saturday August 22nd from 2:00-7:00  p.m., head to Silverlake for Wonder Holes, a pop-up experience celebrating queer art, which doubles as a socially distanced mini-golf course. Tickets available at the link above.

Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival is also happening from August 20th-30th. This year the festival is all digital and streaming, but there are a few drive-in opportunities as well, including the kick-off screening of The Nowhere Inn, a mockumentary thriller starring and written by Annie Clark (known musically as St. Vincent) and her real life friend Carrie Brownstein, on Friday, August 21st at 8:00 p,m. at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. Tickets for the festival drive-ins are available here.

And for those of you who would like to learn a more delicious new skill this week, The Gourmandise School in Santa Monica is offering virtual cooking classes including some for kids and teens. On Saturday, August 22nd, at 1:30 p.m., learn how to make fresh pasta…and on Wednesday, August 26th, at 10:30 a.m., learn how to make your very own bagel.
