The Week Ahead – Events for August 29-September 4

 

If you’re missing music festivals, this is a good week – particularly for jazz fans. The Leimert Park Jazz Festival is happening virtually this year, and LACMA also is hosting a virtual jazz experience. Plus, San Francisco’s annual Outside Lands is “Inside Lands” this week, with all performances streaming on Twitch. We’ve got details below, with plenty of non-musical offerings on the table too…so enjoy! 

 

Community & History

On Sunday, August 30th at 3:00 p.m., the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles hosts a virtual tour of the Art Deco collection of former Art Deco Society of Los Angeles president John Thomas (known as Mr. Art Deco in some circles) and his husband, architectural photographer Chris Launi. The collection includes “4,000 pieces of authentic Art Deco and Streamline Moderne collectibles.” Tickets are $10 for members and $15 for non-members.

In very exciting museum news, The Natural History Museum recently announced it will be reopening the Butterfly Pavilion and parts of its Nature Gardens. If you’re an NHM member, you can reserve tickets now, and the public will be able to register starting September 11th. Though the indoor museum remains closed, this outdoor experience “features up to thirty species of butterflies and caterpillars in a netted enclosure filled with native plants and natural light, and provides spacious pathways to safely connect with nature in the heart of L.A.”

As Los Angeles recognizes the 50th anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium, a march through East Los Angeles against the Vietnam War on August 29th, 1970, join LA Plaza de Artes y Cultura for “Inside the Chicano Moratorium: 50 Years Later with Rosalio Muñoz” via Zoom on Saturday, August 29 at 3 p.m. Rosalio Muñoz is an activist and writer who with and fellow activist Ramses Noriega “organized a peaceful march in East Los Angeles which ended in tragedy, with the attendees attacked and tear-gassed and the death of three people, including journalist Rubén Salazar.” Register for the conversation here.

For even more on the Chicano Moratorium, watch the Latino Theater Company’s reading of August 29 which commemorates the events and journalist Rubén Salazar. It’s available on-demand through September 6.

As always, Chevalier’s Books has a great lineup of authors in conversation this week. On Tuesday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m., catch Jeff Hobbs on his new book Show Them You’re Good, which follows four Los Angeles high school boys in their senior year.  On Wednesday, September 2nd at 7:00 p.m., National Book Award finalist Sarah Shun-lien Bynum talks about her book of short stories, Likes…and on Thursday, September 3rd at 7:00 p.m., Héctor Tobar discusses his new novel, The Last Great Road Bum, which “turns the peripatetic true story of a naive son of Urbana, Illinois, who died fighting with guerrillas in El Salvador into the great American novel for our times.”

Arts & Culture

The Leimert Park Jazz Festival happens every summer and celebrates “jazz, community, and the cultural heritage of Leimert Park.” Even though the usual IRL festivities won’t be taking place, you can pour yourself a drink at home while you watch performances by Michael O’Neill, Munyungo Jackson, Sy Smith and others, along with interviews, art competitions, and more.  Tune in this Saturday, August 29 at 12:00 p.m. on Facebook Live. 

On Friday, September 4th at 6:00 p.m., you have a chance to keep the jazz party going with Jazz at LACMA: Meet the Musicians Live! LACMA has hosted this concert series for 29 years, and they’re not letting a pandemic stop them. This week, jazz Grammy nominated vocalist Sara Gazarek performs. There is limited capacity for this event, so RSVP  soon to get the Zoom link.

San Francisco’s Outside Lands music festival is underway right now, but this year they are “Inside Lands, streaming performances free on Twitch. On Saturday, August 29th you can catch a mix of live and old recorded performances from Elton John, Beach House, Sharon Van Etten, and more. 

Meanwhile, if you want eat a delicious meal while enjoying a virtual concert, dineL.A.’s Summer Restaurant Week runs from September 1-18 and includes takeout options. Nearly 300 restaurants are cooking up specials this year.  (And don’t worry – we’ll have more specific news about local DineLA participants soon!)

For those of you itching for a safe, live, in-person performance, catch Magic Asphalt, a drive-in comedy series at the Magic Castle’s parking lot. On Saturday, August 29th at 7:00 p.m., Iliza Schlesigner headlines, and the lineup is yet to be announced for the Sunday, August 30th show. Tickets start at $125, and you can purchase them here

Local Government

On Saturday, August 29th at 8:15 a.m., L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti joins the Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance to discuss updates on LA’s Green New Deal for an equitable Los Angeles. RSVP here.

In other sustainability news, the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council‘s Sustainability Committee meets virtually via Zoom on Tuesday, September 1st at 7:00 p.m.  The agenda will include discussions of the  GWNC’s Biodiversity Project, and a campaign to help introduce people to electric cars and induction stoves.  Everyone is welcome – just click on the meeting link in the agenda.
