The Week Ahead – Events for January 22-28, 2022

Another bounty of arts and culture awaits you this day and week. The LA Art Show will wrap up on Sunday and Tag Gallery will have its first opening reception of the year. There are also crafty classes and yoga with beer, Duke Ellington tributes, and Holocaust remembrance. Take some time for yourself this week, and if you’ve already been doing that too much, hang out with some friends instead. It’s good for the soul.

 

Arts, Culture, and Other Stuff

 

Tag Gallery is having its first opening reception of 2022! Join Tag and LA based photographer Karen Hochman Brown, along with science teacher and artist Gianna Vargas, for an Artist Reception, this Saturday, January 22 from 4-8 p.m. Their new exhibits, Digital Playground and Desiccated, respectively, are open now through February 12. Tag Gallery is open Wed-Sun from 1-7 p.m. 

The LA Phil at the Walt Disney Concert Hall is the gift that keeps on giving, with a bounty of performances all week long. Kicking things off is Symphonic Ellington: Sacred Concerts, a continuation of tributes to the late, great Duke Ellington on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23. Followed by a rare performance, on Monday, January 24, by singer and songwriter (Blur, Gorillaz) Damon Albarn, who will be playing songs from his new solo album on piano. Don’t miss his only solo US show! Tickets for Damon Albarn range from $65-$125; Sacred Concerts: $20-$214.

Catch the last weekend of the LA Art Show, set to wrap up this Sunday, January 23 at the LA Convention Center. The modern + contemporary art world’s latest and greatest will be displayed in a convention center sized space (180,000 sf to be exact), with more than 80 galleries, museums, and non-profit arts orgs from around the world showcasing works in a variety of media. All works presented by galleries will be available for purchase. In addition, 15% of all ticket sales will benefit the show’s exclusive charity partner, St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital. General admission tickets are $30, but capacity is limited; open Sat 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sun 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. 

Yoga and beer, yes please! Who knew this is what was missing from your life. Green Tree Yoga Meditation is excited to collaborate with Angel City Brewery in offering a yoga class that is open to all levels of experience. Sunday Yoga + Meditation at Angel City Brewery will be happening every Sunday from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Check in is at 10:30; Yoga + Meditation starts at 10:45. Support Green Tree as they continue to create access to healing and health. The cost is a recommended donation of $15-$20. Your class donation also includes one drink at the brewery, which opens at 12 p.m. Perfect timing! 

Now thru winter’s end, ROW DTLA is offering up a cornucopia of workshops and craft kits to bring out the Crafty McCrafterson inside all of us. This week, Makers Mess Presents: Fabric Painting with Irene on Sunday, January 23 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. In this unique, sustainable workshop, you’ll learn how to paint with fabric dyes while giving new life to your old textiles. A tote and a bandana are included, but feel free to bring in your own washed textiles. Natural fibers such as cotton, linen, or silk, and white or light-colored fabric are best. The cost is $75. Capacity is limited.

Chevalier’s Books has just one in the line-up this week, a virtual discussion with Dr. Tammy Nelson about her book, Open Monogamy: A Guide to Co-Creating Your Ideal Relationship Agreement, on Tuesday, January 25 from 6-7 p.m. Dr. Nelson will read from the book and take questions from all you fine people. This event is free, but don’t forget to RSVP!

Did you know that Thursday, January 27 is International Holocaust Rememberance Day, and on the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Holocaust Museum LA will be presenting a webinar to mark the day. 3D modeler and mapping expert, Pavel Belsky, will discuss the layout and function of Auschwitz from his unique perspective as a cartographer. This program is presented in partnership with the Consulate General of Israel in Los Angeles. Tune-in at 6 p.m.; register here. Local Government

 

The Mid City West Neighborhood Council is busy taking care of business again this week, starting on Monday, January 24 with the Arts and Recreation Committee. Meetings for the Executive Council, Social and Racial Equity Committee, Economic Development Committee, and 2022 Homeless Count Volunteer Training are also on the calendar. 

Greater Wilshire Neighborhood CouncilOn the other side of our readership area, the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council starts its week off with a Land Use Committee meeting on Tuesday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. (click here for details).
