The Week Ahead – Events for January 30-February 5, 2021

There’s something for everyone this week – from storytelling for kids, to a history of the architecture of death in Southern California.

Arts & Culture

Join Chevalier’s on Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. for a discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning and best-selling author Jane Smiley on her new book Perestroika in Paris, “a captivating, brilliantly imaginative story of three extraordinary animals–and a young boy–whose lives intersect in Paris.”

L.A. County Library has partnered with LACMA for a series of virtual arts programs featuring LACMA Teaching Artists and staff. On Friday, February 5th at 4:00 p.m., watch a live story reading of Yo Soy Muslim: A Father’s Letter to His Daughter by Mark Gonzales, “brought to life through a variety of expressive art activities centered around the theme of cultural identity,” with Yoruba Peoples as the artist in focus. Register for the event here.

FILM at LACMA also has two film events this week: a screening of Disclosure, “an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender depictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender” on Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. followed by a post-screening conversation with director Sam Feder, producer Amy Scholder, and executive producer Laverne Cox. And on Thursday, February 4th at 7:00 p.m., there’s a screening of A Love Song For Latasha, a documentary reflecting on “the injustice surrounding the shooting death of 15-year-old Latasha Harlins at a South Central Los Angeles store [which] became a flashpoint for the city’s 1992 civil uprising” and uses “oral history and memories from Latasha’s best friend and cousin converge in a dreamlike portrait that shows the impact one brief but brilliant life can have.” It will be followed by a post-screening conversation with director Sophia Nahli Allison, moderated by artist Calida Rawles and the Autry Museum of the American West’s Associate Curator of Western History, Tyree Boyd-Pates.

First Fridays Connected, the virtual series from The Natural History Museums of LA County returns this week “bringing you lively discussions, DJ sets, and live music performances wherever you may be. Hosted and Moderated by neuroscientist and science communicator, Dr. Yewande Pearse (February, March) and biomedical scientist and international advocate for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) inclusion, Dr. Knatokie Ford (April, May, June).” This season, the theme is “Los Angeles at the Intersections,” and on Friday, February 5th, at 6:00 p.m. you can  join scientists and performers for “Solace in Science,” asking “what are the lessons learned from 2020 and how do we move forward and heal?”

History & Community

Saturday, January 30th at 10:00 a.m., the Los Angeles Theatre celebrates its 90th birthday with “a surprise party!” and “opening the doors – virtually of course – to the theatre and her history.” The event is free (though registration is required at the link above) and they are encouraging attendees to join “with coffee or cocktails in hand!”

For more macabre Los Angeles history, join Esotouric’s weekly webinar Touring Southern California’s Architecture of Death with Historian Nathan Marsak on Saturday, January 30th at 12:00 p.m. “for an immersive illustrated lecture on the early cemeteries and innovative mausoleum designs of Southern California.”

Raw Earth Wild Sky, a local clothing design firm based Brookside, is having a huge online sale this weekend with 60% off everything, using the coupon code “NEWSALE” at checkout. All their pieces are made in LA and shipped safely from the home-based studio.
