The Week Ahead – Events for January 9-15, 2021

This week we are heavy in the History & Community category – both local and interplanetary. Learn about the architecture of Los Angeles, how the City Budget works and how you can get involved, a breakdown of the structure of Los Angeles County and the County Department of Public Health’s response to COVID-19 and vaccine distribution…and how to make award-winning tacos.

History & Community

Join the Windsor Square Hancock Park Historical Society on Wednesday, January 13th at 7:00 p.m. for a conversation with with speaker Robert Inman about the revised and updated edition of An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles. “Originally authored over fifty years ago by renowned architectural historians Robert Winter—described by Los Angeles Magazine as both the “spiritual godfather” and “father” of L.A. architecture—and the late, great David Gebhard, this seminal vade mecum of Los Angeles architecture explores every rich potency of the often relentless, but sometimes—as captured here—relenting L.A. cityscape.” Tickets are $10.75 for the presentation and $45 for an autographed copy of the book, which will be delivered by Angel City Press directly to the customer.

For an exploration of someplace a little more far out, join Santa Monica College Senior Lecturer Jim Mahon and Associate Lecturer Sarah Vincent on Friday, January 15th at 8:00 p.m. for one of the weekly Drescher Planetarium shows: The February 2021 Mars Arrivals Preview, which breaks down what to expect from the “three spacecraft scheduled to depart Earth for Mars in July 2020, [where] we will hopefully see three new arrivals — two orbital insertions and one direct atmospheric entry — in February 2021.”

If you’ve got kids at home with nothing to do, Miracle Mile Toy Hall  has a sale for you: every single item in the store is on sale for 20% off the regular price until January 19th. Another local business you can support, of course, is Chevalier’s Boks, which has one book event this week — a discussion  on Tuesday, January 12th at 7:00 p.m. with author Adam Kirsch about his book The Blessing & The Curse, “an insightful and engaging work from “one of America’s finest literary critics” (Wall Street Journal), The Blessing and the Curse brings the Jewish experience vividly to life.”

For something delicious, join LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes on Monday, January 11th at 3:00 p.m. as Jonathan Perez of Macheen demonstrates how to make tacos de suadero and salsa de aguacate Taquera.

The Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council is also hosting another of its Los Angeles Civics 101 Town Halls this week on Monday, January 11th at 7:00 p.m.: Los Angeles County 101, with a special presentation by the County Department of Health. I’ll be hosting and interviewing Fernando Morales, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl’s District Director for West/Metro Los Angeles who will explain “what Los Angeles County is responsible for, how it’s organized, and how it can work for you” and Cristin Mondy, RN, MSN, MPH—SPA 4’s Area Health Officer— who will break down the County Public Health Department’s work to combat COVID-19, outline its plans for vaccine distribution, and more. If you have any questions for the speakers, you can send them ahead of time to me at [email protected] or ask them in the Q&A during the event.

The GWNC also has a Board Meeting on Wednesday, January 13th at 6:30 p.m. and Congressman Jimmy Gomez will be joining. Once available, you can find the agenda for that meeting here.
