The Week Ahead – Events for June 12-18, 2021

Events this week range from cleaning up the L.A. River to getting a slice of pizza from the daughters of music legends. And although Father’s Day isn’t until next week (Sunday, June 20th), this is the week you should probably start thinking about what to get the dads in your life.

Arts & Culture

A new spot in the neighborhood is opening up this weekend, and it’s perfect for any displaced New Yorkers or rap fans in your life:  Juicy Pizza, a New York-style pizzeria from Tyanna Wallace and Tyra Myricks, the daughters of the Notorious B.I.G. and Jam Master Jay.  Opens on Saturday, June 12th at 615 N. La Brea.

Self Help Graphics & Art, a Boyle Heights-based organization “which fosters the creation and advancement of new art works by Chicana/o and Latinx artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms,” which has been around since 1973, is holding its Annual Print Fair online through June 30th. This weekend, it’s also hosting a cyanotype (“a process that combines early photography techniques and printmaking”) Virtual Family Workshop led by artist Fanny Garcia on Saturday, June 12th at 1:00 p.m.

The Huntington has opened its gardens for Summer Evening Strolls. With advance registration, you can wander through the expansive grounds at twilight and enjoy food from the 1919 Café, which is open until 7:00 p.m.

If you want to go for a drive, but not all the way to Pasadena, head to the Hollywood Legion Theater for a Drive In screening of Dirty Dancing on Thursday, June 17th at 8:30 p.m.

Community & History

On Saturday, June 12th at 12:00 p.m., LACMA hosts another online screening of The Politics of Street Vendors, “a short documentary series that follows street vendors as they unpack the history of the vending economy in Los Angeles, their efforts to organize and build sustainable businesses, the challenges and threats they face in this work environment, and the great impact the pandemic has had on this community,” in honor of Ruben Ochoa’s project for LACMA × Snapchat: Monumental Perspectives.

Friends of the Los Angeles River’s Great L.A. River CleanUp is back for a series of small, in-person cleanups at select locations in June and July including on Saturday, June 12th at  the Bette Davis Picnic Area in Glendale and at Bull Creek in Van Nuys, as well as on Saturday, June 19th Glendale Narrows Riverwalk. You can also conduct your own DIY, self-guided cleanup in your neighborhood

For more local nature, plus some beer and food, head to Eagle Rock Brewery on Sunday, June 13th from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for a Pollination Party presented by the Theodore Payne Foundation. The event features an insect Q&A with Lisa Gonzalez, Assistant Collections Manager of the Natural History Museum, plus native pollinator plants from Avenue 33 Farm for sale.

Local Government

The Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance hosts a virtual event on Sunday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m.  addressing the question  “How can we navigate the City’s budget?”  Matt Hale, Deputy Chief of Staff for Budget and Finance Committee Chair Paul Krekorian, will break down “the ins and the outs of the budgeting process and how we can better ensure that our values are reflected in it.” Public banking will also be discussed, “which has huge implications for how the City spends its (our) money and for the environment.”
