The Week Ahead – Events for October 31-November 6, 2020

The last day to vote is this Tuesday! And if you haven’t already done so, you can take part in the electoral process at iconic LA landmarks like Dodger Stadium, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Wiltern. And if you’ve already voted and are looking for some other fun things to do this week, maybe to take your mind off the election, you’ve got plenty of options for that too, including ways to safely celebrate Día de los Muertos.

Community & History

Ordinarily you might be trick or treating with any kids in your life today, but a good COVID-safe and spooky alternative is a driving tour of some of LA’s creepiest looking houses, brought to you by the Friends of Residential Treasures: LA. Of course we all know the Beverly Hills witch house, but this tour takes you to lesser known haunts like The Bogart House in Hollywood where Humphrey Bogart was allegedly living while he dated Peg Entwistle and the so-called “Hobbit Houses” in Burbank which look like they come straight out of a storybook. Find the full tour map which includes photos of the homes’ interiors, architectural information, and plenty of fun creepy facts about each location here

On Saturday, October 31st and Sunday, November 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., peruse a local estate sale at 238 S. Norton Ave. Offerings include “Tables, lamps, books, kitchenware including Le Creuset, Webber grills, plant boxes, plants and planters, outdoor furniture, medical supplies, glassware, brass pieces, candelabras, vintage women and men’s clothing, jewelry, records, tools & so much more!”

While you’re out and about, stop by the Original Farmer’s Market for a special pickle pop up Saturday, October 31st and Sunday, November 1st from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with “New York-style gourmet pickle purveyors” Kaylin & Hobbs.

Arts & Culture

Most in person Día de los Muertos have been cancelled including Olvera Street’s annual festivities, you can still celebrate with them virtually on Sunday, November 1st at 6:00 p.m. to see performances by La Santa Cecilia, Teatro del Barrio, Grupo Tatalejos, and more. You can also visit community altars in person at the Plaza.

Also on Sunday, November 1st from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Hollywood Artisan Market will host an outdoor Day of the Dead Celebration at Hollywood and Cahuenga with more than 100 vendors, live music, raffles, tacos, salsas, cotton candy, ice cream, pizzas, and the instruction to “come hungry!” Admission is $7.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s in-person Día de los Muertos festivities have been canceled, but you can watch its livestream on Sunday, November 1st at 12:00 p.m., hosted by Fernanda Kelly and with performances by David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez of Los Lobos, Buyepongo, and Tropa Magica.

Local Government

A smattering of local neighborhood councils have committee meetings this week: the GWNC Sustainability Committee Meets on Tuesday, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Mid-City West’s Public Safety Committee Meets on Thursday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m., Wilshire Center Koreatown’s Economic Development Committee Meeting also meets Thursday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m., and Hollywood Studio District’s Budget and Finance Committee meets Wednesday November 4th at 6:00 p.m.

Of course if you care about your local government, the most important thing you can do is vote by Tuesday, November 3rd.
