Time for Some Virtual Theatrical Cheer

 

No, you’re not flying to New York to take in the Rockefeller Center tree and see How the Grinch Stole Christmas (or anything else) on Broadway. You don’t have a half dozen choices of local Nutcracker performances, as was the case in 2019, But many local theaters and performing groups have stepped up this year with virtual holiday offerings. Most are streamed rather than live, but hey, this is a year of lowered expectations.

Here’s a collection for your consideration (with a couple of far-flung ones thrown in).

A Christmas Carol Starring Jefferson Mays
On the Stage (fundraiser)

Jefferson Mays plays more than 50 roles in a Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Directed by Michael Arden. Streaming company On the Stage will donate proceeds to support nonprofit theaters affected by the pandemic, including The Geffen Playhouse and Pasadena’s Boston Court. See a trailer here.

Evening 2 (Dec. 19) features The Gift Behind the Gift by Gregg Easterbrook and The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry.
