For those who love to keep busy, Saturday is definitely your day this week – so many options!
First up, for the early birds, is the second day of a two-day estate sale at 752 N. June St., which runs both Friday (today) and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items available include a vintage garden crane statue, white garden bistro table and four chairs, four vintage flurry chairs with 360 degree swivel, vintage dresser, mid-century monkey pod coffee table, vintage couches, china cabinet, glass top Italian four-chair dining set, lots of elephant figurines, Kimball organ, many LP records, corner curio cabinet and more. For details and photos, see the link above.
Next, the City of Los Angeles and City Council President Herb Wesson, in association with the Korean American Coalition (KAC), the Latino Coalition of Los Angeles and The William Grant Still Arts Center, will host a community art exhibit featuring works from both established local artists and promising youth artists. The show’s theme is diversity and the artists’ vision of Los Angeles as it stands today. The exhibit will be held at the EK Gallery, 1125 Crenshaw Blvd., from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The artists include Aise Bourne, Adah Glenn and Patrick Henry Johnson.  See flier for more information.
For those who’d like to make their own art, the Craft and Folk Art Museum will host a Found Object & Assemblage Sculpture Workshop with Monica Wyatt, from 12-2 p.m. on Saturday. Participants will explore the history and process of found object and assemblage art, while making their own wonderful creations. Cost is $55 or $45 for CAFAM members (including materials). Also at CAFAM, from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, you can attend the monthly meeting of the Yarn Bombing Los Angeles Knit Graffiti Collective. Find out what your local guerrilla knitters are up to, share projects you’re working on, and enjoy some good conversation. It’s free and open to the public…and all skill levels are welcome and encouraged.
For movie fans, especially the young or young at heart, this weekend’s kiddie matinee at the New Beverly Cinema is “E.T.,” Steven Spielberg’s heartwarming classic that “paints the screen with unparalleled imagination and overflows with memorable performances, iconic Carlo Rambaldi effects and a stirring John Williams score to tell the timeless tale of love between a young boy and a visitor from another planet.” Not to mention Reese’s Pieces. Showtime is 2 p.m., both Saturday and Sunday.
For those interested in improvements to nearby neighborhoods, the Pico Great Streets Collective will hold a meeting at Saturn St. Elementary School, 5360 Saturn St., from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, to reveal the full slate of improvements that have been planned for Pico Blvd. through the city’s Great Streets program. (Western Ave. is undergoing a similar process through Great Streets.) The organizers say the event will be “the culmination of six months of building a community vision for Destination: Pico,” including six workshops, 700 surveys, and meetings with every business owner on the designated section of the street. Improvements to be unveiled include crosswalks, murals, parklets, curb extensions, and more…including photo-realistic images of what a couple blocks of Pico could look like with the new elements. Public input will be solicited, and there will also be kid-friendly activities and some light refreshments.
Finally on Saturday, another great movie opportunity – a 7 p.m. screening of the great summer-themed musical “Grease” at the Petersen Museum…with the “Greased Lightning” car from the movie on display for a movie-night photo op. For the uninitiated, the movie is a musical about two teens (John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, who were actually in their 30s at the time) in love in sunny 1959 SoCal. But their “Summer Love” turns problematic when school starts in the fall at Rydell High. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and snacks and light refreshments will be served. Tickets are free for Petersen members (with $10 parking), and $5 per couple for non-members (with $12 parking).
On Sunday, the schedule’s pretty light this week (so plenty of time for homework, for all those back in school now), but for those who would like to brush up their first aid and CPR skills, the Westside Jewish Community Center, 5870 W. Olympic Blvd., is offering a Red Cross CPR, First Aid, & AED Certification Class, starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The class will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies, with immediate treatment or by calling for advanced medical care when needed. The cost is $72 for WJCC members, with code LEARNCPRWJCC, or $88 for non-members, with code LEARNCPR
