Weekend Buzz – Events for August 6-7, 2016

miyazaki

Summer’s starting to wind down (most LAUSD students have only one more week of vacation), but there’s still plenty to do this weekend, no matter what you age or interests.

Ampersand_storefrontFor weekend bargain hunters, you can get an early start as Larchmont’s Ampersand boutique starts a “super sale” today (Friday) with special $5, $10 and $20 bargain racks, along with 50% off other clothing and sandals.  The sale runs through Monday, August 8.

tarpitspaintIf you’re in a more creative mood, head over to the La Brea Tar Pits on Saturday morning, for a Paint & Pleistocene art event.  You’ll receive friendly step-by-step painting instruction complete with canvas, paint, brushes and apron to use — all within the inspiring setting of the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum. Leave with a one-of-a-kind creation.  There will be sessions at 8 a.m. (beginner/easy), 11 a.m. (intermediate/avanced) and 3 p.m. (beginner/intermediate).  All sessions are open to all ages (second grade and up recommended) and no experience is necessary. Prices include museum admission for the day.

vrla2For techies, the place to be on Saturday will be the Virtual Reality Los Angeles Summer Expo , which runs Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  It’s billed as “the world’s largest virtual and augmented reality expo, welcoming both consumers and industry professionals.”  The expo will feature cutting-edge demos of the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, Google Cardboard, Samsung GearVR, and more. In all, there will be more than 130 exhibitors and sponsors, and more than 30 special panels and presentations.

petersenphotoexhibitOn Saturday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., the Petersen Museum kicks off an exhibit of the work of renowned motorsports photographer Jesse Alexander, with a special opening reception. During the event, Alexander will participate in an open Q&A with attendees, sharing insights from his long experience recording the people and places of racing, as well as lessons learned from his journey as a photographer and a fan of racing. Print collections of Jesse’s photography  – featuring images of races, drivers, mechanics and fans of both American and European auto sports – will also be available for sale.

heavensgateIf you’re in a movie mood, the American Cinematheque this weekend features a tribute to recently deceased director Michael Cimino at its Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.  “Heaven’s Gate” screens on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.,  and a double-feature of “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” and “Magnum Force” starts at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

wellingtonsquarefarmersmarketOn Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Wellington Square Farmers’ Market, 4394 Washington Blvd. (just west of Crenshaw) in the West Adams area, debuts a new French-style Vintage Arts and Crafts market this week, featuring both new and vintage vendors along with the market’s usual produce vendors, coffee carts and prepared food stalls.  This small, friendly neighborhood market can be a lovely alternative to some of our busier and more crowded Sunday shopping alternatives.

shopwalklogoFor more unique Sunday shopping, check out Shop Walk DTLA, a “day-long community block by block party of tours, discounts, special promotions, pop-ups, happy hours, and in-store events” in downtown Los Angeles’ Historic Core neighborhood.  You can walk, shop local and support small businesses with special pop-ups, discounts and happy hours throughout the neighborhood.

zimmerlogoFor the younger set, the Zimmer Children’s Museum, 6505 Wilshire Blvd., is celebrating the first weekend of the 2016 Summer Olympics with the Zimmer Kids’ Olympics, on Sunday from 3-4 p.m. Preschoolers can find out how high they can jump and how far they can throw…with a Straw Javelin Toss, Olympic Ring Toss, and more.

miyazakiSunday would also be a great time to visit the Mid-City Art House, 5555 Washington Blvd., which is featuring “The Enchanted World of Miyazaki: Tribute Art Show” on both Saturday and Sunday.  The exhibit pays tribute to legendary Japanese filmmaker and animator Hayao Miyazaki, through the work of 22 artists from across the U.S.  This will be a limited time engagement, in L.A for only one weekend. It’s free and family friendly; no tickets required.  Hours are 1 to 7 p.m. (all ages) and 7-11 p.m. (ages 21 and over).

metroconstructionheaderFinally, we leave you with our weekly Metro construction closure notice. This weekend, Wilshire Blvd. will be fully closed for decking and other work from La Brea Ave. to Orange Dr., from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. on Monday.  Please note that our neighborhoods adjacent to the construction area are really feeling the stress of these closures – so please try to detour along major traffic routes such as Highland, La Brea, Olympic and other larger streets, whenever possible.  Please do not cut through the residential streets of Sycamore Square, La Brea Hancock, Miracle Mile, Brookside, Hancock Park or other construction-adjacent areas if you do not have a local destination on those streets.

Thanks from our neighbors…drive safely…and have a great weekend!
