Weekend Buzz: Events for June 22-23, 2019

Join the GWNC for a free water-wise garden tour on Saturday.

Time for another garden tour!  This one is the third installment of the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council’s Water Wise Garden Tour, this year highlighting gardens in the historic Windsor Square neighborhood.  The tour is self-guided, free and open to everyone, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.  Just pick up a map at Memorial Library Park, 4625 W. Olympic Blvd., any time during the tour hours, and you’ll be on your way to seeing beautiful, low-water-use gardens that will provide inspiration to anyone seeking to revitalize their outdoor spaces.

Starting just an hour later, at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the John C. Fremont Library, 6121 Melrose Ave., there will be an organizational meeting of the library’s Play Readers group, to help decide which play the group will perform next.  If you’ve been itching to exercise your inner thespian, this is a great time and place to get involved.  Check it out and claim your part!

Next, and running all three days this weekend (Friday, 5-11 p.m., Saturday, 2-11 p.m., and Sunday 2-10 p.m.) is LAPD Wilshire Division’s annual community Carnival, on Venice Blvd., just east of La Brea.  You can enjoy carnival rides, games, food, and live entertainment.  Tickets are available at the event, or by presale (10 rides for $25) until 5 p.m. today (Friday), by contacing the Wilshire Community Relations Office at 213-473-0200.  Everyone is welcome.

Meanwhile, over at the Craft Contemporary in Miracle Mile, there will be a panel discussion on creativity as a form of protest. “On Protest: Alternative Modes of Protest,” starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with Tatiana von Furstenberg in conversation with renowned British author and “craftivist” Sarah Corbett and others.  “When we think of protest many envision signs, chants, and marching,” says the museum. “But protest can also be a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something.” The event is free with RSVP to [email protected].

Just an hour later, our third local library, Wilshire Branch (149 N. St. Andrews Pl.) checks in for the day with a free podcasting workshop at 1 p.m. on Saturday.  Adults will  learn how to create their own podcasts…and – as an added incentive – the first person who arrives and requests it will get a voucher for 2 free tickets to a Tuesday or Thursday concert at Hollywood Bowl.

Moving on to Sunday, the Brookside Homeowners Association will host its 40th annual block party from 3-7 p.m. Sunday, on the 800 block of S. Muirfield Ave.  Come join the neighbors for music, watermelon and pie-eating contests, dog and “Very Fine Hat” competitions, a bounce house, pony rides, a petting zoo, a dessert competition, potluck, barbecue and more.  Non-resident guests are welcome. Barbecue tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (at the registration table). Potluck contributions are also welcome.

Also on Sunday from 2-5 p.m., FIN Asian Tapas and The Residency, 5750 Melrose Ave., will host the first Larchmont Art & Table event, featuring artworks from both established local artists and young creators from Larchmont Charter School.  (Proceeds from student works sold will benefit the school’s art program.)  Come and enjoy the art…and then stay for a special three-course tasting menu designed just for the event.

And finally on Sunday, starting at 4 p.m., you can get ready for another stressful week with a Guided Meditation with Individual Reiki Healing session with Hilary Malloy at dr pilates, 418 N. Larchmont Blvd.  In this 75-minute session, you’ll recline on your own personal meditation bed, with pillows, blankets, essential oils, and healing crystals, and receive personal hands-on Reiki healing during a guided meditation. Complimentary gift bags  are included in the $39 session price, including crystals and other wellness products. CBD oil and drinks will also be available at an extra cost for an enhanced meditative experience.

Have a great weekend!
