Weekend Buzz – Events for March 2-3, 2019

Ciclavia – the popular open streets event – takes place in Culver City, Mar Vista and Palms on Sunday.

The weather may or may not cooperate this weekend, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed and hope that both the indoor, outdoor and “rain or shine” events on this list do take place (probably a better chance tomorrow than today – the rain is supposed to continue off and on through about noon tomorrow).

First up are two good bargain shopping events, starting with a Larchmont Boulevard Sidewalk Sale, both Saturday and Sunday, where you can find great deals on fun purchases.  For example, Pickett Fences posted on its Instagram page: “We’ll have select items 30-50% off including new markdowns all weekend long!”

Next, the Friends of the John C. Fremont Library will be holding its monthly book sale today (Saturday) from noon to 5 p.m. at the library (6121 Melrose Ave., at June St.)  You can buy books, donate your gently used books, and/or join the organization – it’s just $10/year and all the money the group raises is used to support the library and its free programs.  This month, the book sale features great deals on fiction, with trade paperbacks just three for $1, and hardbacks two for $1.

Meanwhile, the Original Farmers Market will hold its 30th Annual Mardi Gras Celebration, bringing “a true taste of NOLA right to LA’s favorite gathering place at Third & Fairfax.”  The celebrations begin today (Saturday) and run through Fat Tuesday, March 5.  This is “one of the only family-friendly Mardi Gras celebrations in town,” say the Market folks, and it will feature” New Orleans’ classic favorites – King Cake, beignets, delicious Cajun gumbo and jambalaya from The Gumbo Pot – along with a musical line-up of Cajun and Zydeco band favorites that will bring the celebration to life.”  There will also be kids’ activities, bead throwing, and the The Dog Bakery’s Annual Mutti Gras Pet Parade on Saturday, with the best dressed furry four-legged friends crowned King and Queen of Mutti Gras. See the flier for the full schedule of events, times and locations.

For another big, fun cultural celebration, check out the Chinese American Museum’s 18th Annual Los Angeles Lantern Festival, from noon to 5 p.m. today (Saturday) at downtown’s El Pueblo Historical Monument, 425 N. Los Angeles Street. The signature event celebrates the Lunar New Year with community booths, museum tours, live entertainment, music, arts & crafts and more, with a particular focus on community building and education.  Admission and the activities/performances are free…and the organizers promise it will take place rain or shine.

If you’d rather choose something that will guarantee you’ll stay dry, there are two interesting – and free – film screenings today (Saturday).  The first is a free encore screening of “Mirai,” a 2019 Academy Award Nomineee for Best Animated Film, at 2 p.m. at the Japan Foundation, 5700 Wilshire Blvd.  The 98-minute film is the story of four-year-old Kun, who is instantly jealous of his his new baby sister.  But one day Kun “storms off into the garden, where he encounters strange guests from the past and future – including his sister Mirai, as a teenager. Together, Kun and teenage Mirai go on a journey through time and space, uncovering their family’s incredible story.”  It will be shown in Japanese, with English subtitles.

The second free film is “Meow Wolf: Origin Story,” showing at 7:30 tonight (Saturday) at LACMA‘s Bing Theater.  Meow Wolf is a group of artists from Santa Fe, NM, who become a DIY collective.  According to LACMA, “their immersive, large-scale exhibitions crack open a profitable niche in the arts industry, even as their social mission is challenged by the demands of rapid success. The group’s members navigate fracture and loss for years in pursuit of their idealistic vision. When they spark the interest of George R. R. Martin and receive his support to take over an old bowling alley, Meow Wolf builds a massive exhibition with over 140 artists working at a breakneck pace. With the wild success of the House of Eternal Return, Meow Wolf now faces its own internal turmoil as it begins to change the lives of creatives everywhere.”  Please note that although the show is free, tickets are required (see the event link above). Limit two tickets per person.  There will also be a post-screening conversation with the filmmakers and Meow Wolf founders.

Finally, the big event on Sunday is one of the periodic, and hugely popular, Ciclavia open streets events, “Culver City Meets Mar Vista + Palms.” (It’s the closest Ciclavia to us since the last Wilshire Blvd. run in December, 2017.)  For this first Ciclavia of 2019, streets will be closed to cars and open for cyclists, pedestrians, runners, walkers, skaters and other non-motorized traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., along Washington Blvd. and a short stretch of Venice Blvd., from approximately La Cienega to Walgrove Ave., with a short spur up into Palms along Motor Ave.  (see map for details).  Note that this is not a race, so you can start and stop wherever and whenever you like, with traffic flowing in both directions, and just explore the area at your own pace.  It’s a perfect way to enjoy the rest of your weekend after the skies clear on Sunday.

Have a great weekend!
