Weekend Buzz: Events for September 7-8, 2019

Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner” screens on Saturday evening this week at the Hollywood Forever cemetery.

Bargain hunters should start their weekend early this week, by heading out to the Larchmont Boulevard Association’s annual Sidewalk Sale, which runs today through Sunday during business hours, outside Larchmont Blvd. shops whose proprietors are members of the LBA. Great way to spend your lunch hour…or even more of your day.

For another nifty shopping experience, it’s also time for the Craft Contemporary‘s annual Clay LA ceramic markeplace and fundraiser, showcasing emerging and established ceramic makers in the Los Angeles area.  There’s a special VIP Preview and Brunch starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday (the $20 ticket includes museum admission, snacks and cocktails, and early shopping privileges), and then the market will be open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a special Air Dry Clay Activity at 1:30 p.m.  Artists and organizations featured this year are Ahley Pao Ceramics,  Alyson Iwamoto Ceramics, Betsey Carter, D:Ceramics, Ekua Ceramics, EUNBI, Francis River, Gina Zycher Ceramics, Gopi Shah Ceramics, Heo Ceramics, Jolanda Pineda Ceramics, Kristen Erickson, Neenineen, OBJECT-MATTER CERAMIC, POT, Raina Lee, Rami Kim, Ren · Vois, Tiny Badger Ceramics, and Tome Ceramics.

Meanwhile, LAPD’s Olympic Division , 1130 S. Vermont Ave., will host its celebretory event for the 150th anniversary of the LAPD, from 11 a.m. to  3 p.m. on Saturday.  There will be station tours, vintage LAPD vehicles, SWAT, K9 and Bomb Squad demonstrations, bounce houses, food and drinks, and more.

Then, getting back into shopping mode, the John C. Fremont Library, 6121 Melrose Ave., will host its monthly book sale from 12-5 p.m. on Saturday.  Most books are always $1 or less, but this month – to celebrate back-to-school season – all young adult, classics, and children’s books will be half price.

Art lovers will have a couple of options on Saturday evening.  First, from 5-8 p.m., there will be a reception for Cosmic Dream, a selection of paintings by international exhibiting artist Sunny Kim at TAG (The Artists’ Gallery), 5458 Wilshire Blvd.  (The exhibition itself runs through September 19.)  According to the gallery, the paintings stem from “Kim’s curiosity about the mysteries and majesty of the universe, with each canvas being a vessel for the endless possibilities the cosmos has to offer its inhabitants.”

Starting just an hour later, and running fom 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, there will also be an opening reception for the new show Beyond/Within at LaunchLA, 170 S. La Brea.  The two-person exhibition features the sculptures of Samuelle Richardson and the textile paintings of Joy Ray, and “explores the influence of seen and unseen forces in contemporary society, raising questions of power, control and belief.”

Film fans also have a couple of good local options on Saturday evening.  First, the American Cinematheque, at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., will host a special advance screening of the new horror film, “Haunt,” with directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.   The film takes place on Halloween, when “a group of friends encounter an “extreme” haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears.”  The show starts at 7:30 p.m. See the film link above for tickets.

If you prefer sci to horror, then head over to the Hollywood Forever cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd., where the Cinespia summer film series presents the original “Blade Runner,” starting at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday (gates open at 6:15).  There will also be a free photo booth, and DJ music starting at sunset.  BYOB picnics, with beer and wine permitted.

Moving on to Sunday, the Little Ethiopia neighborhood, on Fairfax, just south of Olympic Blvd., will hold its annual neighborhood Festival from noon to 8 p.m.  There will be music, a bounce house, basketball, arts and crafts, games, food and other vendors, and a fashion show – definitely something for everyone in the family!

On Sunday evening, the Cinematheque will offer a triple feature of polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Three Colors” trilogy“Blue,” “White” and “Red” – at the Egyptian Theater, starting at 5 p.m. According to the Cinematheque, the three films are “a brilliant meditation on loss, suffering, solitude and hope.”  (See the film link above for specific story details and start times for each movie.) The films will be shown in their original languages, with English subtitles.

And finally on Sunday, starting at 6:00 p.m., join the folks at the Cat and Fiddle Pub and Restaurant for one of their Proper English Sunday Sessions with food, drinks, live music and DJ sets by Trevor Miller (Mr. Love).   No cover charge – just come on in and enjoy.

Have a great weekend!
