Weekend Buzz: Events for January 8-10

The world has definitely started spinning again after the holiday slowdown.  SO much to do this weekend that we even have a couple of fun things for Friday.

Yard saleFirst up, For those who’d like to start with a pre-weekend estate sale with some old Hollywood cache, the event at 707 N. McCadden (which started Thursday, but continues today (9 am-1 pm), Saturday (9 am-3 pm) and Sunday (9 am-12 pm)), features items from the estate of the late Gia Scala, famous for her beauty and films and television from the 1950s and ’60s.  Lots of old movie memorabilia and collectibles at this one…as well as items from the famous Emilio’s Restaurant (which formerly occupied the Melrose and Highland location that’s now home to Osteria Mozza).

John_C._FremontLater, the Friends of John C. Fremont Branch Library will hold its first book sale of 2016, starting  on Friday, Jan 8th from 12-4 and continuing Saturday, Jan 9th from 12-5. The library is located at 6121 Melrose Ave. (cross street June). Most books are priced between 10 cents and 1 dollar….lots of bargains to be had!

saltandstrawsmallFinally this evening, you can commune with yet another departed icon:  it’s Elvis Presley’s birthday (he would have been 81 today), and Larchmont’s  Salt & Straw will feature a “Happy Birthday Elvis” ice cream flavor (“homemade bacon-peanut butter Oreos…smashed up into delicious bite sized chunks, and swirled into a malted banana pudding ice cream”)…along with an Elvis impersonator from 8-9 p.m.

Moving on to Saturday, the morning can be filled with one of several more civic-minded events.

coveredcasmallFirst, there’s a free Covered California healthcare insurance enrollment event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Korean American Coalition, 3727 W. 6th Street, Suite 305.  Certified Enrollment Counselors will be available to talk with you about health coverage options through Covered California and help you select the best plan for your medical needs and budget.  You can begin the application process, receive an estimate on your monthly payment, or just learn more about your health plan options.  For more information, contact Andrew Aldama at (310) 450-0041

dwp2016smallAlso, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will hold its bi-monthly Customer Service Saturday at four of its Customer Service Centers (closest to us is 4030 S. Crenshaw Blvd.), from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.  In addition to the usual services (bill payments, billing questions, order processing, etc.), this week’s event will feature El Niño preparedness workshops (at 9 and 10:30 a.m.) that include information on rain barrel rebates, the city’s storm preparedness, and tips for your home.  They’ll also be giving away free trees to Los Angeles residents.  (Address verification required via ID/driver’s license or copy of a LADWP utility bill.). Tree supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Limit one per household.

plancheckncsmallA bit later, those interested in civic policy could check out this month’s PlanCheckLA meeting, at 10:30 a.m. at the DWP’s downtown headquarters, 111 N. Hope Street (enter at the Guard Gate on Hope Street saying you are with the Neighborhood Council meeting).  PlanCheckLA is a coalition of Neighborhood Council members interested in city planning matters, and this month’s agenda includes reviews of the city’s proposed Unapproved Dwelling Units Draft Ordinance and proposed amendments to the Small Lot Subdivision Ordinance.  Speakers will include Matthew Glesne and Jae H. Kim, from the Los Angeles City Planning Department.  The meeting is open to all who are interested.

Petersen Automotive Museum 3In the afternoon, you could head over to the all-new Petersen Automotive Museum – which re-opened its main galleries last month, but this weekend brings back its legendary Vault. The Vault offers visitors the chance to go underground on a private tour, walk amongst 120 of the world’s most famous and infamous cars, and gain unprecedented access to one of the museum’s most private areas. According to the Petersen website, “Our new Vault experience will take visitors on private tours led by gifted storytellers, where they can walk the aisles and see 125 of the best cars from the collection in our secure underground facility. It’s quite an experience.” Vault tour tickets are $20 and must be purchased with a general admission ticket. Children under 13 are not permitted on vault tours.

brickslasmallFarther afield, but a must for families with kids of a certain age:  the BricksLA Convention, at the Pasadena Convention Center.  This is not an official LEGO company event, but a place for “Adult Fans Of LEGO to get together and share their common love for the brick with the public.”  There will be “13,000 square feet…of custom made models on display, vendors selling new, used, and vintage LEGO sets, and a free build area for the kids,” as well as special building competitions and events throughout the day.  Best part is it’s definitely family-affordable, with tickets just $5 (and free for kids under 5).

claypotssmallMoving on to Sunday (if you don’t want to catch up with the last day of any of the multi-day events above), head on over to the Craft and Folk Art Museum for a Clay Pots Laboratory, one of the museum’s CraftLab Family Workshops.  The Sunday event will take place from 1:30-3:30 p.m.  Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for children, and free for CAFAM members.

guerillasmallAnd later…um,  well…we’ve definitely saved the weirdest for last:  check out the annual “No Pants Metro Ride” on Sunday afternoon. Yes, it’s a thing – and, actually, the 15th anniversary of the thing (started by an improv group in New York City).  GuerilLA is organizing our local Los Angeles event for the 8th year in a row.  To participate, bring a Metro Tap Card with a day pass, a pair of easily-removable pants (and YES, you DO have to wear underwear!!), and meet your fellow pantsless riders at one of five Metro station rendezvous points (closest to us are the Purple Line station at Wilshire/Western or the Expo Line station in Culver City). Then, “At 1pm, there will be ride captains at each rendezvous point to lead the mission. They are there to meet & brief the agents, to answer any questions, to have everyone de-pantsed before getting on the trains, and to ensure you leave on schedule.”

Hey, we don’t plan ’em…we just report ’em.

Have a great weekend!
