When the Wilshire Warriors PONY baseball team won a spot to compete in Cooperstown at the National Baseball Hall of Fame this summer, the parents starting thinking of ways to pitch in to help raise funds to cover the cost of this amazing week-long tournament experience for the team of 10 boys, ages 12 and under. Comic Lou DiMaggio (no relation to the famous baseball legend Joe – yeah, I had to ask, too!) has organized a comedy show tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Comedy Sportz at 733 Seward Street. Though he’s organized the show to help raise funds for the kids, DiMaggio warns, “it’s for the kids, but don’t bring the kids!”
For the team, most of which has played together since the kids were five or six years old, this trip is the culmination of their young baseball careers, explained DiMaggio. When he thought about how he could help raise funds to cover the Cooperstown expenses, he decided to organize a comedy show.
“This is LA; everybody knows somebody,” said DiMaggio. “Everyone I asked said, ‘sure, when is it?'” DiMaggio, along with his wife, actress Loretta Fox, has organized the entire event, featuring seven professional comics. Anne Etue, Creative Director at Comedy Sportz and godmother to Daniel DiMaggio, who plays second base, outfield and pitcher, donated the space for tonight’s event.
The show features stand up comedians Allan Harvey (Mad Men), Wayne Federman (The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon), Rick Overton (Set List, Groundhog Day), Sharon Houston (Punk’d), Brian Kiley (Conan), Ritch Shydner (I am Comic) and Loretta Fox (My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), with host Lou DiMaggio (Curb Your Enthusiasm).
If you love baseball or just want to laugh, it’s a great deal — tickets are just $25 — for a great cause.
