GWNC Water-Wise Garden Tour This Saturday – Free and Self-Guided

Tour Water-Wise Gardens in Windsor Square and Ridgewood-Wilton on the 3rd GWNC Sustainability Committee Garden Tour

It’s garden tour season — time to get out and smell the roses, and everything else that is blooming after our wonderfully wet winter. This Saturday, June 22, 2019, the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council will host its second Water Wise Garden Tour from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The tour is free and self-guided. Maps will be available at L.A. High Memorial Park, 4625 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90005.

This year’s tour will showcase gardens in the historic Greater Wilshire neighborhoods of Windsor Square and Ridgewood-Wilton, including a remodel of a classic 1922 home to LEED Platinum standards.

The one-year old garden was formerly a lawn, and now creates habitat using California natives, conserves water using drip irrigation and recharges the water table via a rain garden, all while providing a neighborhood-friendly environment. The edible garden is placed near the sidewalk to create a place to start conversations, meet neighbors, and share freshly picked veggies. The back yard was designed around a 50+ year old pineapple guava.

Others features include:

  • Universal design standards
  • Fruit trees utilizing laundry to lawn grey water
  • Mow or no-mow Carex meadow and parkway
  • Paving salvaged from the site
  • Solar panels

All gardens on the tour were nominated by Greater Wilshire residents. The review and selection of garden nominations was made by the GWNC Sustainability Committee.
