Fremont Place, at Wilshire and Rossmore Boulevards, was the first gated community in Los Angeles. The LA Times reported that the Fremont Group said in 1911 that they were developing a subdivision of prestigious homes, mansions, where none of them would cost less than $7500, which was a considerable fortune in those days.

On their website, Ruby Home Luxury Real estate reports that the developers built Greek Revival-style, poured concrete gateways to the community. There is now a security guard shack inside the entrance. The neighborhood grew to comprise some 72 estates with lot sizes of at least 10,000 square feet or more. Many of the homes have at least 7000 square feet of living space. The architecture of the homes includes Italian Renaissance, Georgian Colonial, French Normandy, and Beaux-Arts. The early residents were a who’s who of Los Angeles society.

In the years since, notable residents have continued to live there, such as Muhammad Ali, who died in 2016. Mansion Global reported in 2018 that one Mediterranean-revival style mansion was on the market for $11 million. On 1.25 acres, the 9339-square foot residence has nine bedrooms, six baths, and a chauffer’s quarters above a four-car garage. The estate has been home to King G. Gillette, son of the razor baron, John J. Cantwell, Los Angeles’ first archbishop, and Patricia Barham, one of the first women to report on the Korean War.

Home prices in this enclave were very different in 1977. According to LA County tax records, one 7613-square foot house with eight bedrooms, 10 baths, on a 23,854 lot, built in 1924, sold that year for $324,500. Realtor Andrew Woodward, who grew up at 76 Fremont Place, remembers the neighborhood fondly: “It was like Mayberry. Everybody knew everybody.”

The latest sale, reportedly an all-cash transaction for 129 Fremont Place, sold March 30, 2023 for $6,500,000, according to the MLS records, at $1055.71 per square foot. The four-bedroom, five-bath, 6157 square foot home rests on a 17,988 square foot lot and was on the market for 139 days. This three story, Traditional Style home, with hardwood floors throughout, was built in 1916, is zoned LARE11. Claw foot tubs can be found in the upgrades throughout the house, there is a detached three-car garage, a Zen garden, guest house, and outside dining area with a built-in BBQ, as well as built-in firepits. The architectural details can be seen throughout the property. I enjoyed touring it.
