Director Ava DuVernay Casting Families for New Reality Series

It’s been a strange year, full of upheaval.  But if all of the changes and turmoil have left your family hungry for an adventure, you might want to consider applying to join director Ava DuVernay (13th, Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) in her latest venture – a new 10-part reality TV series called “Home Sweet Home” – which NBC is calling a “social experiment” that will give two very different families “an opportunity to exchange lives for one week and see what it is like to live a very different life.”

As DuVernay explained in a recent interview with Deadline, “The idea for Home Sweet Home came to me during the strange and important times we’re all experiencing. The premise is that we are farther apart than ever, yet bound by what we have in common – concerns with health, safety, justice and community. These notions manifest in each of us in different ways, but nowhere more striking than in the privacy of our own homes. I’m thrilled that NBC and Warner Horizon embraced the challenge of this moment to celebrate the specificity of our differences as we discover the many beautiful things that we have in common.”

Casting producer Kelly Mooney told the Buzz that the show is now “casting all across Southern California, focusing on families with rich cultural and familial traditions that are incorporated in their daily lives.”  She said they are particularly looking for “families with big personalities with close ties to their neighborhood and community; families that are adventurous and curious and that will embrace the experience.”

And, yes, families will get to work with DuVernay herself.  According to Mooney, DuVernay’s production company, ARRAY Filmworks, is producing the series, and the director will also be “handpicking each featured family.”
