Free Online Tutoring Service Available at the Los Angeles Public Library

With schools back in action, many parents are once again looking for academic support for their school-age children. But with all schools still online, people may feel disconnected from extracurricular resources such as tutoring, homework assistance, or ACT/SAT test prep.  As usual, however, our local libraries – even though the buildings are still closed – are ready to help.  Here, Memorial Branch librarian Loren Spector tells us about one tutoring resource available to all Los Angeles Public Library patrons.

As we settle in for another school year and adjust to virtual classrooms, we at the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) want to remind everyone about one of the best resources that we offer K-12 students and adult learners — free online tutoring at tutor.com. It is bilingual (English and Spanish), easy to use and accessible with your LAPL library card.

Through this service, professionally trained tutors and experts offer study skills coaching, computer skills and help in writing, math and a variety of other subjects. There are practice quizzes for middle school students and ACT/SAT/AP prep for high school students. They also offer a drop-off review, where students can submit written assignments or math questions for review and feedback by an expert within 24 hours.

For adults, this service provides GED/HiSET tutoring, grad school test prep for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT and MCAT, plus resume and cover letter review.

It’s easy to connect to tutor.com. Drop-off services are available 24 hours a day and tutoring is available daily from 11 a.m.-11 p.m. To access these resources, visit https://lapl.org/onlinetutor, click on “Connect Now,” and enter your library card number and pin (the last 4 digits of your phone number).

If you don’t have a library card, it’s easy and free to get an e-card at lapl.org. In addition, all Los Angeles Unified School District students have been issued a Student Success library card. If you don’t remember the number, you can request it at https://lapl.org/studentsuccess/verification.

Even though our libraries are temporarily closed, we have many resources available to you at lapl.org, and librarians are ready to answer your questions. We also offer Library To Go services at 20 of our locations (including the Pio Pico-Koreatown and Fairfax branch libraries). You can order materials through our catalog and schedule a contactless pick up from any of our available locations.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions or need additional information. We look forward to seeing you in our libraries soon. In the meantime, we encourage you to take advantage of everything the Los Angeles Public Library has to offer.
