Get Your Vegetable Garden Ready for Fall

The summer vegetable garden at Two Dog Organic Nursery is ready for fall vegetables.

The weather is cooling down, though the temps are expected to spike this weekend, and it’s time think about getting your garden ready for fall.

We contacted JoAnne Trigo, owner of Two Dog Organic Nursery in Miracle Mile for some advice on what to do to get our vegetable garden ready for fall.

First, she said, you don’t have to rip everything out, especially if plants are still producing…but it may be a good time to clean up and fertilize.

“It’s a short season, just few months, then it’s winter,” said Trigo, who recommended planting what you like to eat and added that if you are short on space, consider planting things that will give you a lot for your efforts, like peas. Chard and kale can last two years, so you don’t have to replant every season. Broccolini is another option, and it’s super easy to harvest. Fall is an excellent time to plant lettuces, spinach, garlic, shallots, sugar snap peas and specialty greens like mache.

Trigo also recommended blueberries, which can produce for decades with the right conditions, which she said include pots with excellent drainage and regular feeding to maintain the right acidic balance of the soil.  You can even pre-order asparagus crowns and rhubarb, which can produce for for 15-20 years in dedicated beds.

And, it just so happens, this weekend the Two Dog Organic Nursery  is having a plant sale to help you get your garden ready for the fall.

“We have lots of inventory, hundreds of varieties of seasonal plants and trees as well as everything you need to fertilize and enrich your soil,” said Trigo, who owns the nursery along with her husband Alejandro.

The sale is one day only, Saturday, September 30 from 10 am – 4 pm at the Two Dog Nursery at 914 S. Cloverdale Avenue in the Miracle Mile neighborhood. 10% Off all Certified Organic Fall Veggie & Herb seedlings, fruit trees and berry bushes, plus all Organic Potting Soil, Amendments, EarthBoxes & Smart Pots.
