Graduating during a worldwide pandemic means virtual graduations and distance celebrations for the Class of 2020. Their graduation is one for the history books for sure. But it’s impressive to see all the creative gestures to honor our local grads. The Larchmont Buzz wants to help document these historic graduations with photos and stories of how the community is helping grads mark this important milestone.
Thanks to reader Steve Heaney for sending this photo of flying purple along Arden Avenue to celebrate the Marlborough School Class of 2020 Violets. We’ve also seen some festive lawn signs posted by proud family members around the neighborhood.
A few families have shared photos of their families watching graduation ceremonies on Zoom, and even organizing a neighborhood parade.
And we’ve heard about businesses offering specials gifts or discounts to graduates — like Magnolia Bakery, a national chain, which is offering free cupcakes for any grads who stop in their shops. Locally, grads can stop by Magnolia every Thursday until June 25, and pick up 6 cupcakes or one dozen mini cupcakes for free. If you’re a grad, all you have to do is show your school ID, diploma or come dressed in cap and gown.
Magnolia Bakery is located at 8389 West 3rd Street at Orlando St. Los Angeles, CA Tel.: 323.951.0636; Store Hours: Mon.-Thurs.: 10am-7pm, Fri.-Sat.: 10am-8pm and Sun.: 10am – 7pm.
Meanwhile, Vans Shoes is offering customized shoes for the Class of 2020 for a limited time on its Custom Shoe Platform. The company announced on their website:
“Customization has been a tradition of the California institution since 1966, when founder Paul Van Doren created footwear from the various fabrics customers brought to his shop. For a limited time, Class of 2020 graduates can indulge in this spirit by adding school colors, cap graphics, and graffiti-style “Class of 2020” prints across numerous Vans icons – including the Authentic, Slip-On, Sk8-Hi, Era and Old Skool. In addition to commemorative changes to its Customs program, Vans is hosting a virtual graduation on June 19th. The free event, which will broadcast on the company’s YouTube channel, will be a 90-minute show consisting of an array of curated programming for the Class of 2020. Guests will include Steve Van Doren, Tony Hawk, Jay Howell, and Robin Eisenberg, as well as a special musical artist, whom will be announced on June 10th.”
But we know there are many more ways that families, schools and local businesses have found to celebrate the Class of 2020. We’d like you help to document this unique graduation season.
If you’ve got a grad, or are a grad, please share your story and picture with us. We’ll post them on a 2020 Graduates page that will live on our site forever (this is the internet, after all). Just email us at [email protected], DM on Instagram at larchmontbuzz, or message us on Facebook…and show us your celebrations!
