Well, it looks like “Wilshire/La Brea,” “Wilshire/Fairfax,” and “Wilshire/La Cienega,” aren’t specific enough names for our new Purple Line Extension subway stations. Or, maybe they’re too specific, and something a bit more romantic is in order. Either way, Metro is now asking for community input on what each of the new stations should be called.
The transportation agency has posted a new public poll to solicit name suggestions The poll page says:
Section 1 of the Purple Line Extension Transit Project will add three new stations and 3.92 miles of new subway to Metro’s Rail system. The three new stations will be located at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. The project will extend the current Purple Line from Koreatown through Miracle Mile and is expected to begin operations in 2023.
Metro staff originally developed a set of geographically-based names for these stations and are now seeking input on those names. For more information about the station naming process, take a look at the Station Naming Fact Sheet .
Your proposals for the station names should reflect the following principles:
Transit system context
Property area context
Neighborhood identity
Simplicity

It will definitely be interesting to see what people come up with. For example, is “Miracle Mile” more appropriate for the La Brea station or the Fairfax station? Or could they divide the three stations into something like “Miracle Mile East,” “LACMA/Petersen” and “Miracle Mile West”? Or maybe give some love to other adjacent neighborhoods like “Sycamore Square, “La Brea/Hancock,” or just the more widely known “Hancock Park” (even if none of the stations are actually located within the official boundaries of Hancock Park)? Or maybe just “Mid-City West” for at least one of them.
All we do know at this point is that “Stationy McStationface” probably won’t cut it.
