Preparing for Passover – Homemade Matzah

Passover begins at sundown this evening and we are ready with homemade matzah.

Tonight is the first night of Passover. In preparation, our family made matzah in our pizza oven, because homemade matzah is substantially better.

I first tasted homemade matzah at La Brea Bakery when Nancy Silverton would make limited batches for sale just before the holiday. I was lucky to hear about it and get some but, alas, that ended eventually and we were back to settling for the matzah sold at the grocery store. Because I was not raised Jewish, I never developed that fondness that comes from eating something that was part of your childhood. One year, though, I learned that I could make matzah at home on a pizza stone, and that changed Passover forever. For the last few years, we have been making it in a wood-burning pizza oven. Here’s short video on how that works.
