4.2 Earthquake Jolts LA including Hancock Park Area

A 4.2 earthquake centered off the coast of Malibu jolted the Hancock Park area awake at 2:00 a.m. Wednesday.

We were awakened by shaking in our house this morning from a 4.2 earthquake centered 11 miles off the coast of Malibu, California. Though we are 22 miles from the epicenter, our old wood frame house seemed to amplify the sound and vibration. Maybe you felt it too.

The quake prompted LAFD to move into earthquake mode, under which all 106 neighborhood fire stations conducted a strategic survey of their districts, examining all major areas of concern (transportation infrastructures, large places of assemblages, apartment buildings, power-lines, etc).

Shortly thereafter, the department issued reported there were no reports of damage or injuries and normal operational mode has resumed.

The department offer this timely reminder: “You can’t predict, but you can prepare.” Tips and resources for all disasters, not just earthquakes, are available in a FREE downloadable guide found at https://www.lafd.org/safety/disaster-preparedness

Between the recent rains which caused power outages in the neighborhood, including one that lasted over 30 hours in Windsor Square and the ever-present threat of an earthquake, I think there is a generator in my future!
