The Old Spaghetti Factory, the noodle institution that was once a fixture on Sunset Blvd but has been shuttered since 2007, was bulldozed late Tuesday night to make way for a controversial 23 story high-rise development. Local residents had been fighting for preservation of at least the front face of the Old Spaghetti Factory, and were upset when the bulldozers moved in at 5pm on Feb 21st and worked through the night.
The Gordon Sunset development, located on Sunset at Gordon just west of Bronson, was shepherded through a complicated City Planning approval process by Councilman Eric Garcetti with some 17 exemptions to planning and zoning laws. It is expected to be a residential complex of condominiums and mid-market rental units, “creative space”, parking and retail. Local residents, who thought the historic structure was going to be worked into the design of the new complex, are no doubt fuming over the dead-of-the-night demo that took every last wall down.
