Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish high school student who captured the world’s attention by refusing to attend school on Fridays until her government did something about climate change, sailed to New York recently to address the United Nations. And since then, she has taken her message on the road to cities across North America…including, on Friday, November 1, Los Angeles.
At the climate strike held in downtown’s Grand Park by Youth Climate Strike Los Angeles, Thunberg spoke to a rapt, largely young, and very civil audience of several thousand, repeating her core message that “The scientists have been repeating the same message over and over and over again. And yet they are still not being listened to. It is the year 2019. Why is the world still ignoring the science and those most affected by this crisis?”
As at most of Thunberg’s other recent appearances, her remarks were brief and quickly to the point. (Even in her recent appearance before the U.S. Congress, she simply urged everyone to “listen to the scientists” and to read the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report on how the climate is expected to change as a result of greenhouse gas emissions, and what policymakers can do about it.)Â A full transcript of Friday’s address is available here, and further coverage can be found on NBC4, The Independent and the Los Angeles Times.
