Sigh. At almost the moment we published a story yesterday about the Larchmont Barber Shop planning to re-locate away from Larchmont Blvd. at the end of the year, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a new statewide order, based on the still-surging number of COVID-19 cases in the state, once again shutting down barber shops, hair and nail salons, and many other types of indoor businesses.
All across California, Newsom ordered the closure of:
- Indoor dining at restaurants
- Wineries
- Movie theaters and other family entertainment venues (including bowling alleys, miniature golf, batting cages and arcades)
- Zoos
- Museums
- Cardrooms
Also, according to the order, “bars, brewpubs, breweries, and pubs must close all operations both indoor and outdoor statewide, unless they are offering sit-down, outdoor dine-in meals. Alcohol can only be sold in the same transaction as a meal.”
Finally, Newsom also issued additional closures of certain kinds of INDOOR business operations for counties that have been on a special monitoring list for current infection risks for more than three days in a row (which DOES currently include Los Angeles County). These additional closures for indoor activities include:
- Fitness centers
- Places of worship
- Offices for non-critical business sectors
- Personal care services
- Hair salons and barber shops
- Malls
- Protests
It’s important to note, though, that these businesses and activities will be still be allowed if they “can be modified to operate outside or by pick-up.”

Meanwhile, locally, these new orders mean that while our neighborhood indoor restaurant dining rooms, nail and hair salons, and barbershops are closed again, our Larchmont Blvd. retail stores are still open…and so is our big outdoor mall – The Grove – with a full program of health and safety protocols…as well as the adjacent outdoor food and retail stalls at the Original Farmers Market. So you still have plenty of local dining and shopping opportunities!
