Driving north on Vine to Hollywood, we’ve been watching the progress at the former pink-plastered Galaxy Inn as it’s being transformed from a down-and-out hotel to something new. Now the plans for the 1920’s structure on Vine, just below Santa Monica Blvd. have been released and they look pretty interesting.
Curbed LA reports that the new “Step Up in Hollywood” building will offer 34 units of affordable housing as part of a consortium of two nonprofit housing developers, Â the Hollywood Community Housing Corporation and Step Up On Second. The facility will house the chronically homeless and transitional youth with severe and recurring mental illness, giving this needy segment of society a foothold into stability in their lives.
The new building will be LEED certified using multiple green technologies and include ground floor retail, a computer lab and community room, a commercial kitchen and a cafe for the building’s residents. The renderings show an interesting rainbow-shaped outdoor rooftop garden, and screens of “green” planting materials on exterior surfaces.
