Thanks to the dues and donations of homeowners, the Hancock Park Homeowners Association est. 1948 planted a dozen new Jacaranda trees on the corner of 4th Street and Hudson Avenue today. The owners of the property have agreed to care for the trees and are excited to have the Jacaranda trees installed, an addition to the species currently approved by the City and the Hancock Park HPOZ for planting in the neighborhood.
The Buzz caught up with Sabine Hoppner and her crew, who started at 8 am this morning planting the 12 trees along the northwest corner of 4th Street and Hudson Avenue.
Hoppner found 12 nice, young trees to plant in the parkway where the City has marked for trees. She explained the Jacaranda will grow quickly and, since there’s a lawn planted around them, the new trees are likely to get lots of water to help get them established. Hoppner said her crew decided to name each tree so it would be easier to identify which ones need attention in the future. The 12 trees are named for the members of the Mexican Soccer team, though which tree is named for which player is inside information for the crew only.
“We use our annual dues and other donations made to the HPHA to buy, plant and maintain new parkway trees in our continuing effort to reforest and maintain our urban canopy,” HPHA President Cindy Chvatal Keane told the Buzz. “We will be continuing to plant trees through out the winter months.”
In addition, Chvatal Keane said the association had contracted with an arborist to conduct a tree survey in the next month. She explained they will use the information from the survey to plan for more tree planting, removal and maintenance.
“We will be looking at various tree specifies that create beautiful canopies, are drought tolerant and disease resistant so we can maintain our urban tree canopy,” she said.
