Larchmont’s Former Lipson Building Closing

Soon the entire former Lipson Building 126-148 N Larchmont Blvd. will be covered in scaffolding, as all the businesses have to be out by tomorrow night. This photo, taken earlier this month, shows part of the building currently under construction.

As we have previously reported, all the leases for the shops and businesses in the former Lipson Building at 126-148 North Larchmont Blvd. end at midnight tomorrow. So the street is buzzing with activity this week as shopkeepers scramble to move everything out. In what seems like a very Scrooge-like move, we learned that  Christina Development, which acquired the building in 2018, refused to give any lease extensions, even for 30 days so retailers could finish up the Christmas sales before having to move. We also heard that the owners pressured some tenants to move out before their lease expired, and those who stayed were pressured to turn in keys in the last few days.

But thanks to the resolve of these small businesses, the news is not all bad.

Landis Gifts and Stationery told us it is moving up the street to a “cozy place at 584 N Larchmont Blvd.” and is hoping to re-open the stationery and design studio operating shortly after the new year. Today is the shop’s last day at 148 N. Larchmont, and everything is on sale, so stop in if you want to get some good deals.

Chevalier’s Books is moving across the street to 138 North Larchmont Blvd., and should re-open after the first of year, too.

Vincent Hair Artistry is also moving across the street, but we don’t have details yet on when it will open.

The Larchmont Barbers are relocating too. George Hilario, Cesar Vasquez and Cesar Perez will joining Hilario at a new location at 401 1/2 S Fairfax Avenue. They are taking the Larchmont name with them, and will have the same phone number: (323) 464-6659.

Another Larchmont Barber, Omar Douglas, will be moving to nearby La Coupe, at 7963 Beverly Blvd. (1 1/2 blocks west of Fairfax). You can reach him at (323) 761-9661, book online at BlackStarBarber.com, or through Instagram @larchmontbarber. Douglas told the Buzz he is also available for house calls and for clients who want an outdoor haircut, which he offers on the front porch of his home nearby.

Finally, Lipson Plumbing is also moving up the street, to the office building at 606 N. Larchmont, so you can still find it in the neighborhood. (We got a chance to tour the new space and learn more about the business’ history as the longest tenant in the Lipson Building, a story we are in the process of writing and will post soon.)

No word yet on new locations for CH Boutique, Alegria Bazaar and Poshe Salon, but we hope they will stay in touch with us.

Soon, all these store fronts will be covered up with scaffolding as Christina Development expands its construction site to the cover the entire building for the creation of what it is calling the Larchmont Mercantile. At the time we first posted the plans, we were told the renovation will take two years.

Larchmont is sure changing! Shop safely and support our local businesses.
