Look What SHE Did! and Last Seder at Ebell this Week

Look What SHE Did! will screen four short films about accomplishments of women on Wednesday evening, as part of the Ebell’s celebration of Women’s History Month.

In honor of Women’s History month, the Ebell of Los Angeles offers two noteworthy programs this week, both organized by member Cynthia Comsky that are focused on women and family.

On Wednesday evening, Comsky and co-chair, song writer and artist Mikki Brisk have teamed up with writer/director/producer of television, film and theater Julie Hébert, founder of Look What SHE Did! (www.lookwhatSHEdid.com), a non-profit organization that celebrates unknown female powerhouses, to screen four very short films featuring accomplished women talking about the women who have inspired them with their achievements, their fearlessness, their dedication to making the world better.

Look What SHE Did! started as a lark when Longwood Highlands resident Hébert and friend Jill Klein served on jury duty together. They walked into the Clara Shortridge Foltz courthouse and wondered, “who is Clara Shortridge Foltz?” Hébert told the Buzz.

“After we found out who, we thought, ‘why didn’t we know that and we need to tell people about this!,” Hébert  said. “I think a lot of people just aren’t aware of all the accomplishments of women and so we decided to make short videos and make them available online for anyone to see.” (Klein’s film about Shortridge Folz is one of the films featured on Wednesday, so we won’t spoil the surprise.)

To date, Hébert and her collaborators, all women and several, fresh out of fresh out of film school, have created dozens of films and a foundation to support their efforts to make the stories free and available for anyone to view.

Films to be screened on Wednesday feature Sylvie Drake on Queen Hatshepsut; Ebell President Loyce Braun on Harriet Williams Russel Strong; Jill Klein on Clara Shortridge Foltz and Reneé Threatte on Ruby Bridges. There will be a Q&A with the story tellers following the screening.

“We want to know about these women, we want to discuss them, we want to remember them,” declared Comsky, Hébert and Brisk in the Ebell program.

The Last Seder

On Sunday, you’re invited to spend Passover with the Price family at the Ebell.

“The Last Seder” is the story of what happens when Lily and Marvin Prince’s daughters return for the last Passover in their family home. They find that the magic of the seder ritual is the one thing that will allow the family to heal the past and move on with their lives, explained Comsky, who created PlayDate, a series of play readings at the Ebell, which feature fine actors and directors, allowing local audiences to see great plays and enjoy dinner following for a very reasonable $45 per ticket price ($5 less for Ebell members).

“The Last Seder,” by LA based playwright Jennifer Maisel, debuted in New York in 2012 and has also been around for some time, Comsky told the Buzz.  It has also been staged at the Kennedy Center. Comsky first learned about the play from director Jessica Kubzansky, Co-artistic director at the Theatre @ Boston Court, in 2006, and held on to the idea of presenting it at the Ebell for a number of years.

“They’re a bit of a dysfunctional family, like yours, mine and everyone’s,” laughed Comsky, who decided to bring the comedy to the Ebell because it’s “totally relatable because everyone has a family of some kind or another. We are really fortunate to have Jessica and Jennifer along with a terrific group of actors, it’s really top drawer stuff!”

Comsky and her co-chair Mikki Brisk have also worked with the Ebell chef, so there will some traditional holiday foods like latkes, kugel and brisket in addition to the other foods like chicken and veggies — something for everyone, explained Comsky.
