Los Angeles Public Libraries to Begin Partial Re-Openings on May 3

Memorial Branch Library is one of 37 LAPL branches that will partially re-open on Monday, May 3.

The Los Angeles Public Library has announced that it will begin a phased re-opening on Monday, May 3, offering “limited in-person services at the Central Library and 37 branch libraries across the city.”  This will include the Fairfax and Memorial branches locally, though not yet John C. Fremont or Wilshire.

According to LAPL, services “may include quick browsing, computer access, pick up of holds and mobile printing orders, checking out of materials inside libraries, and Library To Go contactless pick up service.”

“As we begin our phased reopening, we’re focused on creating safe and welcoming spaces for everyone, and we look forward to seeing you soon,” said the library in its announcement.

Hours for the newly re-opened buildings will be:

Central Library Hours
Monday – Friday • 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Regional and Branch Library Hours
Monday, Wednesday & Friday • 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday & Thursday • 12:30 – 7:30 p.m.

For more information, there’s an extensive FAQ available at, covering issues such as mask-wearing inside the libraries (it’s a must), new “Browse & Borrow” rules (only a limited number of patrons will be allowed inside at any one time, and for only up to 60 minutes per person), and things like in-person classes, meeting rooms, lounge seating, and reading rooms (all still unavailable at this time…though computers and printers will be available).

Updates will be provided as the opening date nears, at the links above.
