Today is National Dog Day!

Bailey, a rescue who joined our family five years ago,  is keeping an eye on our daughter Allie’s room while she’s away at graduate school in New York.

In case you were not aware, August 26 is National Dog Day, a day to celebrate those wonderful animals who enrich our lives with their unconditional love.

And, yes, it’s really an official day, according to National Dog Day.com, founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an Animal Welfare Advocate and Pet Lifestyle Expert.

“National Dog Day celebrates all breeds, mixed and pure and serves to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, either from public shelters, rescues and pure breed rescues,” according to the website.

August 26 was chosen because it’s the day Paige adopted her first rescue. Locally, LA County Animal Shelters invite you to consider adopting on this special day. Of course, any day will do! You can click here to see the animals they have available for adoption.

We’re in New York City this week, where residents take their dogs everywhere. Here are some of the dogs we spotted shopping and staying cool inside on a hot day.
