Today is National Voter Registration Day, a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. Since it was first observed in 2012, nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday. Earlier this year, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. Voting rights have been hard earned throughout the history of our nation. We should not take them for granted. But in order to vote, you need to be registered. The League of Women Voters provided this simple checklist below with links, so you can check today to make sure you are ready to cast your ballot on November 3, 2020.
- Register to Vote Online: It’s simple, it’s free, and it’s secure. You can register here. In LA County, the deadline to get every eligible voter registered is October 19. This year, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is mailing out ballots to every registered voter and this deadline is critical. Anyone who is not registered to vote by October 19 will not be mailed their Vote by Mail ballot in the upcoming Presidential General Election. You can also check out the County’s latest digital voting tool, Make a Plan to Vote, an easy-to-use website available in 12 languages that guides voters through an online user-friendly experience. While voters are making their plans, they are provided with critical election information and voting resources to ensure they are prepared and know their safe voting options in the Presidential General Election.
- This is a good day to check your registration status. You might have registered years ago but it’s never a bad idea to check if your registration is active. Good idea if you changed address, recently filled out a DMV document, changed your name, relocated back from college, etc.
- Bookmark the League of Women Voters’ website VotersEdge.org for information on what’s on the ballot. Do your homework before you receive your ballot or before you vote using nonpartisan information, campaign finance reports, endorsement lists, ballot measure pros and cons and candidate bios. You can also find your closest vote center and information on how to vote.

Field is a seasoned voter educator who volunteers with the League of Women Voters. A frequent speaker at the Ebell, Field will take voters through how to vote, when to mail in your ballot, where you can drop one off as well as answer questions about the many complicated state and county measures on the ballot.
Field told the Buzz she hopes to give voters confidence in the process of casting their ballot and making sure it is counted.
