Congresswoman Karen Bass is now leading developer Rick Caruso by 4,384 votes in the Los Angeles mayoral race, according to updated election results released late Friday afternoon by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC). Caruso had been leading on election night but the race has been tightening as more votes are counted. County officials said there are still an estimated 811,300 ballots that remain to be counted, and officials will continue to accept ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received by November 15, seven days after the election. The County has 30 days to certify the election.

Among more local returns, Katy Young Yaroslavsky and Hugo Soto-Martinez both increased their leads against their opponents in our local City Council races. In CD 5, Yaroslavsky’s now 15 points  or 7,630 votes ahead of Sam Yebri, up from just over 5,000 votes ahead on Election night.

And in CD13, Soto-Martinez’s tally over incumbent Mitch O’Farrell has added another 453 votes, increasing his lead from 2,611 to 2,158 votes. O’Farrell added 968 votes to his total, but he is still lagging behind. There are still an estimated 811,300 ballots that remain to be counted, according to election officials. These are county-wide ballots so it’s not clear how many would affect our local City Council district races.

Meanwhile, the lead in the LA County Third Supervisorial District race has shifted. West Hollywood City Councilmember Lindsey Horvath is now leading State Senator Bob Hertzberg by a very slim margin of 670 votes.

This latest update includes 79,018 ballots processed since the last update on Thursday. Another update is expected later today. The total election ballot count is now 1,531,210, which is 27.21% of registered voters. The estimated number of outstanding ballots to be processed is 811,300.

These include:

Vote by Mail ballots (VBM): 790,000
Conditional Voter Registration ballots: 21,000
Provisional ballots: 300

As we reported yesterday, county officials expect the number of outstanding Vote by Mail ballots to increase as the RR/CC continues to accept ballots that were postmarked by Election Day and which may be received through Tuesday, November 15.
