Dr. Eric Gudas is not only a veteran teacher of English and writing at the secondary and college levels, he is also the father of a high-school age child. So he understands a lot of the uncertainty parents feel about this coming school year, during which students are unlikely to return to campus full time. In his one-one-one and group sessions with middle and high school students, conducted via Zoom, Dr. Gudas offers tutoring tailored to students’ needs.

Since the pandemic began, Dr. Gudas has tutored extensively on Zoom, so he knows how to leverage the platform, in conjunction with shared Google documents, for constructive tutoring sessions.  He is also comfortable enough on the platform to make his students feel comfortable too. Dr. Gudas easily builds rapport with students in virtual environments, and meets them, non-judgmentally, wherever they are in their academic development.

Dr. Gudas offers:

Summer enrichment tutoring for individuals and small groups, which allow students to flex their critical reading and writing skills between now and August
“Book club”-type enrichment classes, where students read, discuss, and write about books of their choice
School-year instruction that supplements the curriculum in students’ English and writing-based classes at schools
Coaching and essay practice for both AP English classes
Assistance with writing college-admissions essays, a form of writing with which Dr. Gudas is very experienced.

Since the late ’90s, Dr. Gudas has taught at Polytechnic School, Vistamar School, Marlborough Summer School, Johns Hopkins’ Center for Talented Youth, as well as at UC Davis, UCLA (where he received his Ph.D. in English), Cal State Los Angeles, and Occidenal College. His full resume is available on his website. In addition, he regularly publishes essays and reviews in The Los Angeles Review of Books.

Dr. Gudas charges $50 per session for individual tutoring. His charge for small-group tutoring depends on the number of students, but the per-student charge often comes out to less than his rate for individuals.

Testimonials

Eric Gudas’s thoughtful and intelligent editing skills will keep your own voice front and center even as he improves your writing. Eric brings decades of experience as an educator to his tutoring of middle and high school students. Eric knows the craft of writing inside and out, and I would happily trust him to tutor my own kids.

Dr. Gudas was my Freshman year English professor at UCLA. His teaching style is unique, because he really tries to get to know you and your story when revising your papers. Rather than simply reading my papers to check for simple spelling or grammar mistakes, he pushed me in ways that allowed me to think outside the box, which helped me grow as a writer.
