A few weeks ago the Buzz reported that Melrose Elementary teacher Sachiko Miyaji was a national finalist in the Great American Teach Off contest, hoping to win a $10,000 grant for the school.  Melrose Elementary family and friends and Buzz readers have been voting every day to help get Ms. Miyaji to the top and now after five rounds of voting, Ms. Miyaji has made it through the first three rounds and has just two more to go to winning the money and making her students very proud.

Miyaji classMelrose Elementary is made up of 60% Title 1 students, meaning at or below the poverty line, so winning this $10,000 grant would mean a tremendous amount to the school.  According to Melrose parent Mika Mingasson, “Every day when her students see Ms. Miyaji at the school’s morning meeting, they chant ‘Go Ms. Miyaji! Go Ms. Miyaji!’ The entire school community has been rallying, and it has been a tremendous boost to show our support for not just Ms. Miyaji, but all of our teachers, who are all “Great American Teachers.”

If you live in the area and want to help a local public school, consider taking a minute to go online and vote for Ms Miyaji. Do it this week,  to get her to the last round.
