Windsor Square Photographer James Lane’s Images Projected at Helms Bakery District

Windsor Square photographer Jim Lane’s work can be seen in projection at the Helms Bakery Design Center through the end of the week.

We were excited to check out a nighttime exhibit of Windsor Square resident James Lane’s photography now on display at the Helms Bakery District. Lane is one of a number of local artists whose work has been projected onto the entrance of the Helms Design Center. It’s part of an ongoing exhibition called “Projecting Possibilities” curated by the Culver City Arts Foundation and supported with grants to exhibiting artists by the Foundation and the Helms Bakery District.  The exhibit features the work of a different artist every week.

“Art restores our souls, eases our worry, grief, and isolation. Art inspires, educates, and delights. Art embraces and quiets us in our time of need. This program is designed to cultivate creativity and encourage community connection through arts and culture,” according to the exhibit website.

It took a minute to find the exhibit, but once we did, it’s super easy to see the colorful projections of Lane’s floral images in the glass door entrance to the Helms Design Center building, whether driving or walking along Washington Blvd. We thought it might be inside the shopping district, but it’s not. You don’t even have to park or leave your car if you don’t want to, but it’s worth parking and walking up to the entrance so you can see the images up close.

Lane describes his work as complex photography because he incorporates multiple images on various print materials. The projected format doesn’t render that subtlety but it does captures the brilliant color and graphic quality. Lane told the Buzz he will opening a show at the TAG Gallery in June where viewers will be able to get close the art work and see how it is created.

Lane’s work will be displayed for the remainder of the week. The exhibition by may be viewed from sunset until 2:00 am on the entrance of the Helms Design Center at 8745 Washington Boulevard, projecting out for street-side viewing.
