As they say, “all politics is local,” and there is nothing more local than the neighborhood council. While it’s advisory and everyone serves as an elected volunteer, our neighborhood council is important because it’s the only quasi-official space for conversations to take place about the quality of life in our neighborhoods and that directly affects our property values.

We admit, the meetings can be tedious and boring, we have sat through many over the years. But, we dedicate a lot of coverage to the meetings because the issues discussed may have a profound impact on our daily lives, more so than any others. For example, as we reported, the GWNC Land Use Committee is thinking about how we can encourage gentle density and increased walkability on Upper Larchmont Blvd as part of the City’s housing planning process. We also report on the activities of other important committees like transportation and resilience because those committee conversations turned into speed humps on 6th Street and a push for LADWP to be more transparent and responsive.

Choosing qualified, authentic candidates is our job as members of the community. Elections for all 21 board seats on the Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council are coming up in April. And on Monday, March 27, local voters will have a chance to meet the 39 candidates running to fill the GWNC’s 15 geographic area-based seats, five special interest seats (Business, Education, Religion, Renters, and Non-Profit Organizations), and one At Large seat. The candidate forum will take place at a special meeting of the GWNC board, starting at 6 p.m. via Zoom.

The meeting is open to everyone who would like to learn more about the GWNC, the elections, and the neighbors running to represent them on the board.

Meet This Tree: Magnolia x soulangeana – Saucer Magnolia

In her latest column, Buzz contributor Emina Darakjy introduces the Magnolia soulangeana – Saucer Magnolia, also called the Chinese Magnolia or the Japanese Magnolia. (all photos from Emina Darak

Did you know it was born in France?

It is from the Magnoliaceae family and is native to France and Japan. A small to medium size deciduous tree that can reach a height of 20 to 25 feet tall and as wide. The tree is a hybrid magnolia that was bred by crossing 2 Asian magnolias by a French botanist by the name of Etienne Soulange-Bodin in 1826 at his Chateaux de Fromont near Paris.

For months before the flowers appear, tree branches are covered with fuzzy buds emerging from velvety leaves apple-green in color, alternate and oval. In late winter to early spring, these buds develop into large, waxy and sweet-scented blooms appearing on bare branches. The blooms are tulip shaped at first, opening to a saucer form after that, exposing the prominent stamens. The flowers range in color from white to shades of light pink and deep purple. When in bloom this tree is so spectacular looking providing a focal point in a park or in one’s garden.

The tree does best in full sun, prefers rich and moist soil but is considered drought tolerant once established. The tree is known to tolerate pollution and can survive a colder climate.

The trunk is smooth and silvery-gray and can be grown as a multi trunk with low branching or trained as a single trunk. Because of its small size, this tree is a good candidate for planting under power lines. It is also deer resistant. It attracts many pollinators and provides a good source of food for birds who like to build their nests in its branches.

The tree is very easy to care for and there are no serious known pests or diseases to worry about. Litter from the flowers can be a problem for some.
If you are looking for a magnificent ornamental tree that shouts “Hello Spring” the Saucer Magnolia is the one.

Los Angeles has so many plays and musicals, classics and world premieres, indoors and out, that it’s undeniably time to buy tickets and head on out, “ wrote Buzz theatre writer Laura Foti Cohen in her Spring Theater Wrap-Up story.

The Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival celebrates 30 years of bringing solo women’s performances to LA. This weekend’s lineup is extensive.

Cohen also reviewed Echo Theater Company’s The Thin Place which has nothing to do with Ozempic. Playwright Lucas Hnath has created a world with supernatural elements, and the thin place is a fragile boundary between earthly and the spirit world. The Thin Place is playing a Atwater Village Theatre 3269 Casitas Ave.

Backstage with the Buzz writer Sheila Tepper wrote “Our LA Opera is giving us a wonderful gift of presenting Pelléas & Mélisande. LA Opera continues its 2022/23 season with Claude Debussy’s masterpiece Pelléas et Mélisande conducted by Music Director James Conlon. This is a new production to Los Angeles of this enigmatic tale of hidden longing and lingering suspicion.

Readers can see Impressions de Pelléas, an abbreviated version of Debussy’s original five-act opera, Pelléas and Mélisande, reimagined on a chamber scale at The Ebell of Los Angeles: Impressions of Pelléas. Tuesday, April 4, 2023 – 6:30pm preceded by a discussion with World-renowned conductor and music director at LA Opera, James Conlon.

And last but not least, events curator Julia Christiansen posted her weekly “The Week Ahead – Events for March 25-31, 2023” featuring The Hollywood Heritage Museum’s Afternoon @ The Barn: Legacy of the Hollywood Blacklist event this Sunday at 2 p.m.; The MAUM Market happening at ROW DTLA this Saturday, March 25 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m; Peacock Day at the Arboretum; book signings at Chevalier’s Books, the Opening of the Butterfly Pavilion at NHMA and gardening event in Hancock Park.

The Look What She Did! Annual Women’s History Month Benefit is Sunday, March 26 at The Ebell of Los Angeles – tickets available!

This Sunday, Look What She Did!, the nonprofit organization that celebrates the stories of extraordinary women, will honor Melinda White and Lilly Ledbetter at annual benefit brunch honoring at 11:00 a.m. on March 26, 2023, at the historic women’s nonprofit Ebell of Los Angeles.

Look What She Did was founded in 2017 with the mission to inspire women and girls to greatness by bringing to light stories of remarkable women who changed the world. The organization creates short films and events featuring female storytellers celebrating women who inspire them. The collection of over 150 films is freely offered to be viewed, discussed, and enjoyed at www.lookwhatshedid.com.

The 2023 Look What SHE Did! Women’s History Month Benefit will honor Lilly Ledbetter, equal pay activist and namesake of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and give an award to Melinda White, CEO of Transit Wireless. The event will also feature guest addresses by LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell and producer, Jyoti Sarda, as well as the world premiere of Look What SHE Did!’s short film on Lilly Ledbetter, narrated by Rachel Feldman, director of the upcoming feature film “Lilly”, starring Patricia Arquette.

As we mentioned in our previous story about the SEIU Local 99 strike, which is keeping local LAUSD schools closed yesterday, today, and tomorrow, a number of city departments and other organizations are stepping in to help fill the gap for parents. Yesterday, we passed along links to LAUSD’s free Grab and Go food distribution, which handed out six meals to students to tide them over for three days, along with extended programming and hours for some LA Rec and Parks locations, and free admission offered by the LA Zoo, Natural History Museum and La Brea Tar Pits. Today, on day two of the school closures, we offer a few additional opportunities and resources for affected families:

Child Care – Free supervision is available at several specific LAUSD, LA County, and LA City sites (including both Wilton Place Elementary and Los Angeles High School in our area). See the full list and interactive map here.

Financial Assistance – Teachers and families facing uncertainty can contact the Jewish Free Loan Association about 0% loans (up to $7,500 with one qualified guarantor and up to $15,000 with two qualified guarantors) to cover basic living expenses, including rent, food, utilities, child care, and other emergency expenses.

Japanese American Museum – Free weekday admission to all Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) students and their chaperones for the duration of the LAUSD staff and teacher strike. Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and Thursdays from 12 p.m.–8 p.m. Guided tours not included. There must be at least one adult present for every ten students visiting together as a group. Groups of more than ten individuals should make a reservation by emailing groupvisits@janm.org or calling 213.830.5601.

Other Museums & Attractions – The Hammer Museum, MOCA, Broad, California African American Museum, California Science Center, and Griffith Park’s Travel Town are always free.

Petersen Museum – Free general admission to all LAUSD students under 17 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the strike. Tickets only available onsite at any ticket counter.

Despite the rain, the crew of the hit television show “Loot,” starring Maya Rudolph, was filming on Larchmont today. Filming is taking place inside Chevalier’s Books, where the front window has been transformed, including a lovely azalea plant in the front of the store.

The Loot crew will also be filming inside Clark Street Bakery. We did a double take, thinking Clark Street has added fresh juice to its amazing bakery menu. Turns out, though, it’s part of the show.

We talked to location manager Jeff Rubinstein earlier today, who told us the crew really appreciates being on Larchmont and will wrap up on Friday morning.

“All our equipment will be gone by early Friday morning,” said Rubinstein. The show paid shop owners and the Larchmont Boulevard Association a fee for the shoot. The LBA uses the funds to support beautification efforts on the street.

“What if they threw a play and a concert broke out? That’s what’s happening at the Geffen Playhouse’s world premiere musical The Lonely Few, where a Broadway-tested cast wins over the audience from the first note.

“The Geffen’s smaller Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater is so believable as a bar that it seems unfair that it doesn’t actually serve drinks. The show takes place all over the room, including on the bar itself, requiring audience members seated at it to swivel around to catch the action.

“Tony-winner Lauren Patten tears up the stage as Lila, a talented singer-songwriter-guitarist in a small Kentucky town. By day she works at a discount grocery story and by night she plays at a dive bar with her band, the Lonely Few. The band consists of bassist Dylan (Damon Daunno), keyboardist JJ (Helen J Shen), and drummer/bar owner Paul (Thomas Silcott), with behind-the-scenes musicians led by Music Director and player Myrna Conn taking everything to the next level.

“The trajectory of both Lila and her band changes radically when Amy (the riveting Ciara Renée), on tour and signed to a record label, comes to town. Impressed by the band and taken by Lila, she offers the Lonely Few a gig as her opening act for the last three weeks of her tour, ending in Nashville.”

The show plays Tuesday through Sunday in the Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater at Geffen Playhouse, 10886 Le Conte Ave. in Westwood. Tickets are $49-$149 and can be purchased here. With yet another winter storm upon us today, LADWP

With yet another winter storm upon us today, LADWP offered residents these storm tips, which have been shared by the Windsor Square and Hancock Park homeowners associations. The winds are gusty, initially predicted to get up 60 mph in some areas, and the forecast as we write this calls for partly cloudy conditions now with rain expected to start again later this afternoon and into this evening. (Though at the moment, as we’re publishing this, it’s sunny!)

In anticipation of the storm, LADWP said it has scheduled crews to be available around the clock, including scheduling additional qualified line clearance crews for tree clearing. We saw crews working in the neighborhoods yesterday as well.

LADWP recommends the following in the event of a power outage:

Keep a flashlight and extra batteries nearby. Never use candles in a power outage or other emergency.
Keep a fully charged cell phone on hand. During power outages, you may lose phone service and any cordless landline phones may also lose power.
Keep a fully charged external battery pack handy in case you need to charge any of your electronics while the power is out. If power does go out:
Report outages online here or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
Sign up for outage alerts at www.ladwp.com/outages. You will need an LADWP online account to register.
Switch off all lights, except for one, so you will know when your power has been restored.
Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed to keep food cold.
Check on vulnerable friends and neighbors to make sure they are safe.
In addition to reporting outages to LADWP, homeowners associations are also asking residents to report power outages to their Block Captains. If you live in Windsor Square and aren’t sure who your block captain is, please email blockcaptains@windsorsquare.org. In Hancock Park, you can check the HPHOA website or email the block captains chair.

LADWP also reminds customers to use caution around any downed or dangling wires or poles. If you see a downed wire, always assume it is LIVE. Never touch ANY wire that is down or dangling and immediately dial 9-1-1.

Local teachers were out picketing today, despite the wet weather in solidarity with co-workers SEIU Local 99 union, which represents a wide variety of school support staff. The union called a three-day strike against the district, starting this morning at 4 a.m.

John Burroughs’ UTLA-affiliated teachers, including local resident Renee Senigram, told the Buzz the “UTLA is standing in solidarity because SEIU workers can barely pay rent and put food on the table at their current salary,” said Senigram.

The strike has closed all District schools through Thursday, affecting more than 420,000 students and their families.

Local politicians showed solidarity included City Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez, a former labor organizer, whose staff visited several school sites this morning, and U.S. Congressional Representative Adam Schiff, who was quoted by the LA Times saying that the $25,000 median income for LAUSD bus drivers, cafeteria workers and school aides amounts to “poverty wages.”

LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said several days before the strike that the union was “simply refusing to negotiate,” and added a statement today saying the school closures are “detrimental not only for academics but also for health and social emotional support.” But he also said the District is willing to continue talks with the union.

Meanwhile, other city departments, agencies, and non-profit organizations are working hard to support the district’s families for the next three days. These include LAUSD’s Grab and Go free food distribution sites (where students can take up to six meals for the next three days), extended programming and recreation hours from the Department of Parks and Recreation, and free admission to the LA Zoo, the Natural History Museum, and the La Brea Tar Pits, The Broad, MOCA, and the Japanese American National Museum
